Chapter 1 - The Folder on the Stage

The applause started late, as if two hundred people needed permission to believe what they had just heard.

I reached Malcolm at the podium and accepted his offered hand.

His fingers were steady.

Mine were, too, although my shoulder ached every time I breathed.

“Congratulations, Ms. Vance,” he said into the microphone.

Behind the stage lights, Julian was a pale shape beside Camilla's unmistakable red dress.

I could have enjoyed his expression for another minute.

Instead, I asked Malcolm to finish the announcement.

He introduced the new board slate and the emergency financing agreement that had saved Aurelia from a creditor's demand due at midnight.

He didn't mention Julian.

That omission frightened my husband more than any accusation could have.

When Malcolm invited questions, Julian pushed through the crowd.

“This is a conflict of interest,” he called.

A dozen phones rose.

“I am the chief strategy officer, and I was never informed my own wife was negotiating against this company.”

I leaned toward the microphone.

“Northstar negotiated with Aurelia's board, its legal counsel, and its lenders.”

“You used our marriage to steal information.”

“No,” I said.

“You used our marriage to convince yourself I could never understand it.”

A quiet rustle moved through the audience.

General counsel Elena Brooks stepped up with a thick sealed folder.

She spoke carefully, refusing to turn a corporate announcement into a public trial.

“The board has initiated an independent review of certain vendor arrangements.”

Julian's eyes moved straight to the folder.

He knew what it might contain.

Camilla stepped away from the crowd, perhaps hoping nobody would notice.

Elena continued.

“As a protective measure, approvals for the affected accounts have been suspended pending verification.”

Julian rushed forward.

“You cannot do that without my authorization.”

Malcolm's voice hardened.

“The board can, and it has.”

Julian looked at me again.

For a moment the smug man from the champagne table disappeared, leaving someone who was calculating escape routes.

I heard a small crack.

It was only the stem of a glass breaking under somebody's shoe.

Yet Julian flinched.

When the ceremony ended, employees formed a respectful corridor rather than approach me.

One woman near the door whispered that her department had lost thirty colleagues during the expansion.

I told her that protecting jobs mattered more than tonight's applause.

Her eyes filled, but she didn't thank me.

I didn't deserve thanks yet.

Saving a company on paper was not the same as making it safe for the people inside it.

Elena caught my elbow near the service entrance.

“There's a development,” she said.

She showed me a message from the forensic accountant, Daniel Cho.

One of the suspect vendors had submitted a fresh payment request during Malcolm's speech.

The payment was for $2.4 million.

It had been marked urgent.

The authorizing executive was Julian.

And the destination bank account had just changed.

“That payment cannot clear,” I said.

“It won't,” Elena answered.

“But someone inside finance overrode the freeze request.”

From across the hallway came a familiar voice.

“Who exactly are you accusing, Audrey?”

Julian stood at the other end of the corridor.

In his hand was his phone.

On the screen I could see an outgoing message containing two words.

Destroy everything.
