Chapter 15 - The Night Northbridge Burned

The fire began in a records warehouse outside Pittsburgh.
A local emergency crew reached the building before the federal team.
Smoke poured from the loading bay, and the sprinkler system had been disabled.
Maya and Preston were believed to be inside.
Vale coordinated with firefighters rather than sending armed men blindly through the flames.
A rescue crew found Maya behind a locked office door.
She was disoriented but alive.
Preston wasn't beside her.
The firefighters searched again as the roof began to fail.
They found him trapped beneath a collapsed shelving unit.
Both witnesses reached the hospital.
Northbridge's security chief was arrested two blocks away with an ignition device and copies of the falsified evacuation map.
The prosecutor kept the chain of evidence intact.
I watched the rescue updates with Nora.
She wrote, IS MAYA OKAY?
"She's alive," I said.
Nora closed her eyes in relief.
She did not ask whether Preston had survived until much later.
When I told her he had, she wrote, HE STILL HAS TO ANSWER.
"He will."
Federal agents searched the warehouse after it was declared safe.
Most of the physical files were gone.
But Rachel's microfilm showed investigators where Northbridge had hidden mirrored records.
The digital repository survived because it was stored offsite under an account registered to one of Nathan's shell companies.
Vale obtained a court order and froze it.
Then everything collapsed at once.
Dean Mercer was arrested.
The original detective was placed under investigation for taking payments.
The Kensington, Sterling, Holbrook, and Caldwell families hired a parade of attorneys.
They accused investigators of overreach.
They attacked witness credibility.
They tried to keep records sealed.
But the filings could no longer stop every witness from speaking.
Maya's recording was authenticated.
The backup camera video was preserved.
Nora's medical reports documented her injuries.
Leila's testimony linked Rachel's death to Northbridge.
And Farah's account connected the modern conspiracy to the original Vanguard operation.
Just before dawn, Bishop brought me a new warrant application.
"We've identified where Nathan is," he said.
The location was a private airfield.
An aircraft sat fueled on the runway.
Its registration number made my stomach turn.
May you like
It was the same aircraft that supposedly exploded eighteen years ago.
