CHAPTER 2 — THE FOLDER

Cordelia slept for almost fourteen hours.

When she woke, Leo was safe beside her, wrapped in soft blankets that smelled like clean linen and warmth instead of hospital chemicals.

For the first time, she didn’t hear machines.

Just silence.

Peaceful. Controlled. Expensive.

Downstairs, her father sat alone in a study that looked like it had never forgotten anything.

On the table in front of him was a thick black folder.

No name.

No label.

Just consequences waiting to be opened.

His assistant stood nearby.

“It’s everything we’ve found so far,” the man said. “His financial transfers, offshore accounts… and the incident reports.”

Her father opened the folder.

Page after page.

Smiling photos.

Signed documents.

Hidden transactions.

Then—

A photo.

Caleb at a restaurant.

Cordelia alone on a bus in the reflection of a window.

The same night.

The same moment.

Her father’s fingers slowly tightened on the edge of the paper.

“This wasn’t neglect,” he said quietly.

“It was calculation.”

He closed the folder.

Not anger yet.

Something worse.

Clarity.

Upstairs, Cordelia walked slowly into the hallway, holding Leo.

She heard her father’s voice through the door.

Calm.

Controlled.

Final.

“Find everything. I want his entire structure exposed. No warning.”

A pause.

Then—

“And prepare legal action. He made the mistake of thinking she had no one.”

Cordelia froze.

For the first time, she understood something terrifying.

Caleb hadn’t just abandoned her.

He had underestimated her entire existence.
