CHAPTER 1 — THE FATHER’S HAND

CHAPTER 1 — THE FATHER’S HAND

The bus doors opened before Cordelia even realized it had stopped.

She was still holding Leo tightly against her chest, her body weak from exhaustion, her hospital gown hidden under a thin coat that did nothing against the cold air outside.

A black car was already waiting.

Not a taxi.

Not an ambulance.

A convoy.

Men in tailored suits stepped out first, scanning the surroundings. One of them gently opened the bus door wider.

“Miss Cordelia… we’ve been sent by your father.”

Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

It had been years since she said that word out loud.

Father.

The moment she stepped down with her newborn, everything around her felt unreal—like the world had suddenly shifted scale.

The bus drove away behind her.

Leaving her old life inside it.

Inside the convoy car, she finally allowed herself to breathe.

For the first time that day, someone else was carrying the weight.

At the estate, lights turned on across a vast mansion as if it had been waiting for her arrival.

And at the front steps stood a man she had not seen in nearly a decade.

Her father.

He didn’t smile.

He didn’t rush.

He simply walked forward and looked at her.

Then at the baby.

Then back at her face—pale, exhausted, broken in a way he understood too well.

“Who did this?” he asked quietly.

Cordelia’s voice shook.

“Caleb…”

A pause.

A silence that felt heavier than stone.

Her father nodded once.

Not in acceptance.

May you like

But in decision.

“Bring her inside.”
