Chapter 1 — The Woman Behind the Curtain
The ballroom remained silent.
No one dared to speak.
Adrian's phone continued vibrating in his trembling hand. Every few seconds another executive called. Another bank demanded confirmation. Another legal adviser asked whether the emergency order was real.
"It can't be happening," Adrian muttered.
Arthur Bennett calmly adjusted his cufflinks.
"It already has."
Vanessa stepped forward, forcing a nervous laugh.
"This is ridiculous. Adrian owns Cole Global."
Arthur looked at her without emotion.
"No."
His answer landed harder than a slap.
"He managed it."
Every guest exchanged confused glances.
Adrian stared at Arthur.
"What are you talking about?"
Arthur slowly removed a slim black folder from his briefcase.
"For twelve years, every voting share, every holding company, every investment trust has belonged to Ms. Evelyn Hart."
The room froze.
Adrian snatched the folder.
Inside were documents carrying Evelyn's signature—dated years before their marriage.
Every acquisition...
Every merger...
Every billion-dollar expansion...
They had all been approved by her.
His hands began to shake.
"You let me believe it was mine."
Evelyn looked at him with quiet disappointment.
"I let you build your confidence."
