Chapter 4 – The Man Behind the Monster

The investigation exploded across the country.

Within forty-eight hours...

Federal agents raided shell companies.

Children hidden inside illegal facilities were rescued.

The senator resigned.

Two judges were arrested.

Three police commanders disappeared into federal custody.

Every piece of evidence had been delivered anonymously.

No one could prove who had exposed the network.

Weeks later...

Eli walked out of Pine View Recovery Center clean for the first time in years.

He hugged Sable without saying a word.

He didn't need to.

She had never stopped believing in him.

That evening, she returned to Dante's greenhouse.

The orchids were blooming.

"You could leave," Dante said.

"I know."

"You owe me nothing."

"I stopped owing you the day my brother came home."

Silence settled between them.

Finally she asked the question everyone else feared.

"Were the stories about you true?"

Dante looked through the glass roof toward the fading sunset.

"Some were."

"And the rest?"

"They needed a monster."

He turned toward her.

"So the real monsters could stay invisible."

For the first time...

Sable saw not a Mafia boss.

Not a king.

Not a criminal.

Only a man who had spent years fighting evil from a place where no hero could survive.

She smiled.

Not because she trusted him completely.

But because she finally understood him.

Sometimes justice didn't wear a badge.

Sometimes it wore a charcoal suit.

And sometimes...

The bravest person in the room was simply the waitress who refused to be afraid.

The End.
