Chapter 2: The Hidden Recording
Chapter 2: The Hidden Recording
The following morning, the FBI officially took control of the investigation.
Every employee who had remained in the building that night was interviewed.
Including Officer Daniel Reyes.
His statement lasted nearly four hours.
Then Agent Grant asked a question no one expected.
"Why did you immediately run to Elevator Three?"
Daniel frowned.
"The radio."
Grant slowly shook her head.
"The radio transmission came thirty seconds after the elevator stopped."
Daniel stared at her.
"That's impossible."
"I was already running."
Grant exchanged a glance with another investigator.
Someone else had alerted him.
But who?
As technicians reconstructed the building's surveillance system, one damaged security camera unexpectedly yielded partial audio.
The video was distorted.
Almost unusable.
But the voices...
Were perfectly clear.
Two men.
Standing near the maintenance room forty minutes before Emma entered the elevator.
The first voice asked quietly,
"Is everything ready?"
The second answered,
"Once she gets inside, no one will hear her."
The timestamp matched exactly.
Agent Grant immediately ordered voice analysis.
Hours later, another breakthrough arrived.
One of the voices belonged to a senior federal contractor already under investigation by Emma's legal team.
His company had received more than three billion dollars in fraudulent government contracts.
Emma had planned to recommend criminal indictments the following week.
Someone had decided she would never reach that meeting.
Grant immediately requested arrest warrants.
But it was already too late.
The suspect had vanished.
Private jet.
False passport.
Unknown destination.
The conspiracy had moved faster than the investigation.
Back at the hospital, Emma finally asked to see her son.
Doctors wheeled her into the neonatal intensive care unit.
Inside an incubator lay a tiny baby boy.
Covered in tubes.
Fighting for every breath.
Emma rested one trembling finger against the glass.
"I'm here."
"You kept your promise."
The baby's tiny hand curled around her fingertip.
Standing behind her, Daniel quietly looked away.
