CHAPTER 8: The Ghost Protocol

The sound of boots crunching on broken glass grew terrifyingly close, echoing off the concrete pillars just two rows over.

I didn't hesitate anymore. The grief and shock inside me were instantly incinerated by a cold, searing rage. I scrambled across the wet concrete, wrenched open the rear door of the armored Maybach, and threw myself inside, slamming the heavy door shut behind me.

The interior was pitch black except for the faint glow of the dashboard instrumentation. I hit the start button twice. The heavy V8 engine roared to life with a deep, authoritative purr that vibrated through the floorboards.

"Biometric verification required," a synthesized robotic voice chimed softly from the dashboard console. "Please place thumb on scanner."

I pressed my right thumb against the illuminated glass panel beside the steering wheel.

Identity confirmed: Elena Sterling-Beckett. Master Override Engaged.

Instantly, the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree. A small holographic map projected upward from the center console, casting a sharp blue glow across the cabin. A pulsing red waypoint blinked furiously in the middle of the California desert—Joshua Tree National Park, deep within an abandoned military installation long struck from public maps.

"Vehicle locked in autonomous transit mode," the system announced. "Engaging smoke screen and decoy transponders."

A heavy thud echoed from the rear of the car as someone slammed their fist against the trunk.

"Open the door, Mrs. Beckett!" Vance’s harsh, grating voice shouted from just outside the window. "You can't outrun what's coming!"

I slammed my foot down on the accelerator. The armored Maybach surged forward with brutal, terrifying force, smashing straight through a set of reinforced security gates at the end of the sub-level garage with a deafening crash of snapping steel and shattering glass.

The vehicle burst out into the cool night air of downtown Phoenix, sliding sideways across a deserted side street before correcting itself and rocketing onto the interstate on-ramp heading west toward the desert.

In the rearview mirror, I watched as the two black SUVs poured out of the garage garage behind me, their high beams flashing as they gave chase, sirens wailing in the distance as local police units finally responded to the silent alarms.

I looked down at the heavy silver pocket watch resting in my lap. My hands were stained with Marcus’s blood, but my grip on the casing was unshakeable. With a steady thumb, I pressed the gold stem twice.

A tiny, microscopic laser projector built into the rim of the watch clicked open, casting a shimmering blue holographic schematic onto the windshield of the speeding car.

It wasn't just a map to a desert bunker. It was a complete organizational chart of Beckett & Sterling, listing every single politician, judge, and federal prosecutor on their payroll—including the name at the very top of the syndicate.

A name I never, ever expected to see.

My own lawyer—the man handling our family estate for the last decade.

Before I could fully process the betrayal, the dashboard screen flashed an urgent amber warning: Incoming encrypted transmission from unknown sender.

I tapped the accept button on the console. A distorted, electronically masked voice crackled through the vehicle's high-end surround sound speakers.

"Congratulations on escaping the lobby, Elena," the voice murmured smoothly, dripping with a terrifying familiarity. "Now let's see how long you survive the drive through the dark."
