CHAPTER 10: The Joshua Tree Safehouse

The Maybach fishtailed across the wet asphalt as the rear-left tire finally blew out with a loud pop, throwing sparks against the concrete barrier of the interstate.

I wrenched the steering wheel hard, ignoring the warning sirens blaring from the dashboard, and yanked the car off the highway onto an unpaved desert exit ramp leading deep into the desolate expanse of Joshua Tree National Park.

Dust and gravel kicked up in a massive, blinding cloud behind us as I tore down the winding dirt road, the heavy SUVs right on my bumper, their high beams cutting through the dark desert night like searchlights.

According to the holographic map projected on the windshield, the safehouse was less than two miles away—an old Cold War-era radar installation buried deep inside a granite mesa.

"Autonomous override disengaged," the dashboard robotic voice announced. "Manual control required for final approach."

"Damn it," I muttered, gripping the steering wheel as the car bounced violently over a rocky incline.

Up ahead, the dirt road abruptly ended at a massive chain-link gate covered in rusted barbed wire and faded government warning signs: DANGER — RESTRICTED MILITARY ZONE. AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.

I didn't slow down. I slammed my foot down on the gas pedal, and the armored Maybach smashed straight through the iron gates, sending heavy metal posts flying into the brush like toothpicks.

The car skidded to a halt in front of a heavy steel blast door embedded directly into the side of the towering granite cliff.

Behind me, the two black SUVs screeched to a halt, blocking the only way out. Doors flew open, and heavy tactical boots hit the dirt.

I didn't wait. I grabbed the heavy silver pocket watch, hopped out of the driver's side door into the freezing desert wind, and sprinted toward the biometric panel mounted beside the blast door.

"Mrs. Beckett! Don't move!" a voice bellowed through the dark.

It was David Vance Jr.—the scarred mercenary—stepping out from the headlights of the lead SUV, raising his assault rifle straight toward my chest.

My hands shook as I pressed the pocket watch against the scanner on the blast door, holding the brass casing firmly against the glass.

Biometric scan accepted. Master override confirmed.

With a deep, resonant mechanical groan, the massive steel doors began to slowly slide inward, revealing a brightly lit, sterile concrete corridor stretching deep into the mountain.

Vance sprinted forward, shouting in a blind rage, lifting his rifle to fire.

As the blast door slid wide open, a familiar figure stepped out from the shadows of the corridor inside the bunker, holding a heavy tactical shotgun aimed squarely at Vance's chest.

"Step away from my daughter, David," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the doorway—a voice I hadn't heard in twenty years, but one I would know anywhere.

Vance froze dead in his tracks, his rifle slowly lowering as he stared in utter disbelief at the man standing in the doorway.

My father stepped into the light, looking older, scarred, but very much alive. He turned his piercing grey eyes toward me, a grim smile touching his lips.

"Welcome home, Elena," my father said quietly. "It's time I told you the truth about your husband... and the man who really killed your mother."
