Chapter 19 - Back to Table 7

Victor's warning remained on the black phone after the video ended.

DON'T.

One sign.

One word.

One brother telling another not to obey the obvious demand.

Gabriel stared at the dark screen.

"He does not want me to go."

Chloe shook her head.

"That is not necessarily what he meant."

Gabriel looked at her.

"He signed don't."

"Don't what?"

"Don't come alone?"

"Don't trust the card?"

"Don't go to Il Canto?"

"Don't use the front door?"

"Victor's language is coming back in fragments."

"You cannot turn one sign into the sentence you are already afraid of."

Beatrice nodded firmly.

She signed, "Good."

Gabriel looked at her.

"I understood that one."

"Good," Chloe said.

"You are improving under pressure."

Agent Cross returned from the hallway with two agents.

The building network had been restored.

Dominic's private elevator had opened into an underground parking garage.

A sedan had left three minutes before federal agents reached the exit.

The plate was stolen.

The car was already gone.

Cross put the black phone into an evidence bag.

"Il Canto is two miles from here."

"We lock down the surrounding blocks."

Gabriel shook his head.

"No visible perimeter."

Cross looked at him.

"You are not running this operation."

"Dominic will see marked units and move Victor."

"He may move him anyway."

"Then we make him believe I am coming alone."

Cross folded her arms.

"And you actually do not come alone."

Gabriel looked at Chloe.

"No."

Chloe sighed.

"We are doing this again?"

"You are not going inside."

"He used my brother's death to build this trap."

"That does not make you bulletproof."

"Neither are you."

"I know."

"Then stop acting like danger grants you more rights than everyone else."

Cross looked between them.

"I am beginning to understand the dynamic."

Matteo nodded.

"It gets worse."

Gabriel ignored him.

Beatrice stepped toward her son.

She signed slowly.

"Chloe sees what you miss."

Gabriel watched.

He recognized CHLOE and SEE.

He looked to Chloe for the rest.

She translated.

Beatrice continued.

"You hear what Chloe cannot."

"Matteo knows the systems."

"Cross knows the law."

"I know Dominic."

"Stop trying to become four people because you are afraid to lose one."

Gabriel stared at his mother.

Chloe translated the last sentence more softly.

Something in Gabriel's face changed.

He had spent the entire story confusing responsibility with total control.

This time he looked around the room instead of toward the door.

"Fine."

Chloe raised an eyebrow.

"That sounded healthier."

"Do not ruin it."

Cross opened a city map on the boardroom screen.

"Il Canto has three public entrances."

"Front dining room."

"Kitchen service alley."

"Basement delivery access."

Marco answered Chloe's call on the second ring.

He sounded exhausted.

"Please tell me you are calling to resign."

"Not yet."

"Then I dislike this conversation already."

"Is anyone inside the restaurant?"

"Two prep cooks and me."

"We were cleaning after the break-in."

"Lock the kitchen doors."

"Why?"

Chloe looked at Gabriel.

He nodded.

"Dominic may be coming back."

Marco went silent.

Then he said, "I would like to revise my career choices."

"Listen to me."

"Do not use the office phone."

"Do not touch the security panel."

"Take the cooks through the rear alley and walk to the bakery across the street."

"Do not run."

"Do not look back."

Marco's breathing changed.

"Are you coming?"

"Yes."

"That was not comforting."

"I know."

Marco hesitated.

"Chloe."

"What?"

"There is a light on in the VIP room."

Everyone in the boardroom went still.

"Table 7?"

"Yes."

"I turned everything off an hour ago."

Chloe's eyes moved to Gabriel.

"Get out now."

Marco did not argue again.

Cross divided her team.

Two agents took the roof of the building across the street.

Four entered through the basement of the adjoining property using a service corridor from old city plans.

Matteo went with them because he knew the security system Dominic had installed.

Cross stayed near the front with Gabriel.

Chloe and Beatrice were supposed to remain in an observation van.

That plan lasted six minutes.

Beatrice saw Mara being escorted into another federal vehicle and signed something at Chloe.

"What?"

Beatrice repeated it.

"Mara said Dominic learned ASL for secret meetings."

"Yes."

"Then Victor may be signing because Dominic can understand him."

Chloe frowned.

"Meaning he could not give us a detailed warning on camera."

Beatrice nodded.

"He chose a basic sign because Dominic would think he meant do not come."

"But we need context."

Beatrice pointed at the restaurant.

Then she signed, "Camera angle."

Chloe remembered the video.

Victor had signed DON'T low against his chest.

D'Amato had stood behind him.

Dominic had not appeared.

Maybe Victor was not warning Gabriel away.

Maybe he was telling someone else not to do something.

Chloe asked Cross to replay the clip.

The agent brought up the recovered copy on a tablet.

They watched frame by frame.

D'Amato held the card.

COME ALONE TO IL CANTO.

Victor looked at the camera.

His right hand formed DON'T.

But his eyes did not stay on the lens.

They flicked down and to his left.

Chloe froze the frame.

"He is looking at something."

Cross zoomed.

A reflective metal surface appeared at the edge of the image.

In it, a second card lay on a table.

Only part was visible.

Chloe could read three letters.

FIR.

Beatrice saw it too.

Her face changed.

"Fire."

Chloe nodded.

"Don't fire?"

Cross frowned.

"Could mean do not shoot."

Beatrice shook her head.

She signed, "Victor used fire for the warehouse memory."

Chloe's pulse increased.

"Don't fire."

"Maybe he is saying the fire story is wrong."

Beatrice touched her wrist and signed TIME.

"Not fire now."

"Fire before."

Chloe looked at Cross.

"He may have been trying to tell us something about the old fire, not this meeting."

Cross studied the clip.

"Or we are forcing meaning onto one sign."

Chloe nodded.

"Exactly."

"So we need eyes inside."

Cross looked at her.

"No."

Chloe almost laughed.

"You too?"

"I am a federal agent."

"It is literally my job to say no to civilians entering hostage situations."

Beatrice raised her hand.

Cross looked at her.

Beatrice signed, "I am not a civilian."

Cross translated for herself and almost smiled.

"Legally, you are."

Beatrice looked offended.

Chloe said, "There is a dumbwaiter shaft from the old kitchen to the VIP service pantry."

Cross turned to her.

"How do you know?"

"I work there."

"It is sealed on the dining-room side but open in the pantry."

"You can put a camera through it from the kitchen basement."

Cross considered that.

"That I can use."

Five minutes later, Chloe was wearing a federal audio receiver she was absolutely not supposed to treat like a badge.

She stayed in the basement kitchen with Beatrice and two agents.

Cross and Gabriel approached the front dining room.

Matteo fed a fiber-optic camera through the old dumbwaiter shaft.

The video appeared on a small monitor beside Chloe.

Table 7 was set exactly as it had been the night before.

White linen.

Crystal.

Silver.

One bottle of Barolo.

Dominic sat in Gabriel's old chair.

Victor sat beside him.

D'Amato stood near the wall.

Samuel was no longer there because Cross had him in custody.

A fourth man stood near the service door.

Chloe recognized him from the first dinner.

One of Gabriel's lieutenants.

His name was Nicholas Vale.

He had barely spoken all night.

Now he held a pistol low against his leg.

Chloe's stomach tightened.

"Nick too," she whispered into the receiver.

Gabriel heard her through an earpiece.

He did not respond.

The front doors opened.

Gabriel entered alone.

At least it looked that way.

Cross remained out of sight near the host station.

Dominic smiled.

"Table 7."

Gabriel stopped ten feet from the table.

"You do love theater."

"You built the stage."

Dominic gestured toward the chair opposite him.

"Sit."

Gabriel stayed standing.

Victor looked at him.

His face was bruised but he appeared alert.

His hands rested on the table.

D'Amato watched them closely.

Dominic did too.

Chloe understood why Victor had used only one sign on camera.

Dominic could read more than they had assumed.

Gabriel looked at his brother.

"Are you hurt?"

Victor read his lips.

He shook his head.

Dominic smiled.

"He survived six years."

"Frank is not going to damage him in the final hour."

Gabriel's gaze moved to D'Amato.

"Frank."

The former security chief looked away first.

"You searched Chloe's apartment."

D'Amato said nothing.

"You installed Il Canto's cameras."

Nothing.

"You followed Leo."

D'Amato's jaw tightened.

Dominic poured himself wine.

"We are not here for confessions."

Gabriel looked at the glass.

"You still mark the wrong ones?"

Dominic's smile thinned.

He remembered Beatrice's warning from the first dinner.

"Your mother complicated things."

"My mother has been complicating things since 1949."

Beatrice saw Gabriel's lips on the monitor.

She smiled.

Chloe whispered a translation.

Dominic leaned back.

"You never appreciated her before."

"Do not pretend you did."

"I understood her better than you."

"You learned enough ASL to spy on her."

"You learned none and called it love."

The sentence hit Gabriel.

Dominic saw that.

"That is what bothers you most, isn't it?"

"Not Vincent."

"Not the money."

"Not even Bennett."

"You cannot forgive yourself for being the son who did not listen."

Gabriel's voice stayed quiet.

"You are right."

Dominic looked surprised.

"I was a bad son."

"I let convenience become distance."

"I let other people interpret my mother because learning her language made me remember my father."

Chloe looked sharply at the monitor.

There it was.

The story behind Gabriel stopping ASL at fourteen.

Dominic smiled again.

"Antonio hated the signing."

"He said it made the family look weak."

Gabriel's face hardened.

"He hit Vincent for signing at dinner once."

"And he hit me for answering."

Beatrice closed her eyes in the basement.

Chloe looked at her.

She had known, of course.

Gabriel continued.

"So I stopped."

"Vincent didn't."

"I told myself I was adapting."

"Really, I was afraid."

Dominic swirled the wine.

"Beautiful confession."

"Irrelevant, but beautiful."

Gabriel stepped closer to Table 7.

"It is relevant because you built everything on what people were afraid to look at."

"My mother's hands."

"My brother's questions."

"Chloe's grief."

"Leo's evidence."

"You did not create silence."

"You rented it from people too frightened to speak."

Dominic's expression hardened.

"Sit down."

Gabriel sat.

D'Amato moved behind Victor.

Nicholas moved closer to the door.

Dominic opened a folder.

Inside were transfer documents and a written confession.

Gabriel glanced at the first page.

"What is this?"

"Your exit."

"You sign the company transfer."

"You admit the Pier Twelve operation was yours."

"You admit Leo Bennett was investigated under your order."

"You admit Samuel acted under your authority."

"Then Victor walks out."

Gabriel looked at him.

"You expect me to confess to your crimes."

"No."

"I expect you to confess to a version of the truth everyone already believes."

Dominic pushed a pen across the table.

"You did sign 417-B."

"You did run Pier Twelve."

"Samuel did work for you on paper."

"The board already saw your instability today."

"The government wants a Costello."

"Give them one."

Gabriel did not touch the pen.

"And you?"

Dominic smiled.

"I save the legitimate companies."

"I become the reasonable relative who cleaned up your mess."

"Everyone gets what they need."

"Except the dead," Gabriel said.

Dominic's smile disappeared.

Victor's fingers moved once against the table.

Tiny.

D'Amato slapped his hand flat.

"Keep still."

Chloe's anger spiked.

She looked at the monitor.

Victor moved one finger again.

Not ASL exactly.

A tap.

Pause.

Two taps.

Pause.

Three.

Beatrice grabbed Chloe's arm.

She signed, "Childhood game."

Chloe looked at her.

"What game?"

Beatrice tapped Chloe's palm.

One.

Pause.

Two.

"Letters by number?"

Beatrice nodded.

Victor tapped again.

3.

1.

13.

Chloe wrote numbers.

C.

A.

M.

Then 5.

18.

1.

CAMERA.

Victor was spelling CAMERA.

Chloe whispered into Gabriel's earpiece.

"Victor says camera."

Gabriel did not visibly react.

His eyes moved once toward the ceiling camera Dominic controlled.

Victor tapped again.

14.

15.

20.

NOT.

Then 15.

14.

ON.

CAMERA NOT ON.

Chloe frowned.

The fiber-optic feed showed Dominic's camera above the wine cabinet.

Its status light was off.

"He says Dominic's camera is not recording."

Why did that matter?

Then Victor tapped more numbers.

4.

1.

13.

1.

20.

15.

DAMATO.

Chloe wrote quickly.

8.

1.

19.

HAS.

16.

8.

15.

14.

5.

PHONE.

D'AMATO HAS PHONE.

Beatrice understood first.

She signed, "Recording."

Chloe stared at D'Amato on the monitor.

His left jacket pocket bulged around a phone.

He was secretly recording Dominic.

Gabriel heard Chloe whisper the conclusion.

His eyes flicked toward D'Amato.

The former security chief noticed.

For one second, fear crossed his face.

Dominic did not see it.

Gabriel leaned back.

"You said we are not here for confessions."

"Correct."

"Then answer one question."

Dominic smiled.

"For old times."

"Why Leo?"

Dominic's face went blank.

"He found Vincent at the clinic."

"So?"

"So he knew Vincent survived the fire."

"He knew you had lied to me."

"He knew more than that."

Dominic looked at Victor.

"Your brother remembered fragments after Leo visited."

"Names."

"Numbers."

"Where he moved the archive."

Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

"You thought Leo triggered his memory."

"He did."

"Then you ordered Leo watched."

"You authorized that."

"I authorized recovery of stolen digital property."

Dominic smiled.

"And what did you think recovery looked like?"

"Not a staged car crash."

D'Amato's face tightened.

Dominic's eyes stayed on Gabriel.

"Paul Mercer was supposed to frighten him."

Chloe stopped breathing.

The basement seemed to disappear around her.

Dominic continued.

"Run him off the road."

"Take the computer bag."

"Leave him alive."

Gabriel's voice became deadly quiet.

"But Leo died."

Dominic looked toward D'Amato for the first time.

"Frank overcorrected."

D'Amato's face transformed.

"You told me no witnesses."

Dominic went still.

D'Amato had finally spoken.

And his phone was recording.

Gabriel looked at him.

"What did he tell you?"

D'Amato realized too late that anger had opened the door.

Dominic stood.

"Shut up."

D'Amato stepped away from Victor.

"You wrote cleanup on the order."

"You told Samuel Mercer was expendable too."

Dominic's face went white with rage.

"Give me the phone."

D'Amato backed away.

"No."

Nicholas raised his weapon.

Victor moved instantly.

He swept the wine bottle from the table.

It shattered on the floor between Nicholas and D'Amato.

Nicholas flinched.

Gabriel lunged across the table.

Cross entered from the dining room at the same second.

"Federal agents!"

Everything moved at once.

Nicholas dropped behind a chair.

D'Amato threw the phone across the table toward Gabriel.

Dominic grabbed it first.

Victor tackled Dominic's arm.

The phone slid across the linen.

Gabriel caught it.

A gunshot cracked into the ceiling.

Chloe could not see who fired from the basement feed.

Beatrice could not hear it.

She saw everyone on-screen duck and immediately understood.

She grabbed Chloe's wrist.

"Victor."

Victor was on the floor.

Gabriel pulled him behind the table.

Cross's agents swarmed Nicholas.

D'Amato raised both hands.

Dominic backed toward the service door.

Cross pointed at him.

"Stop."

He did not.

He ran into the service pantry.

Gabriel started after him.

Victor grabbed his sleeve.

Gabriel looked down.

Victor signed a complete sentence for the first time without hesitation.

"Let the law take him."

Gabriel froze.

Chloe whispered the translation into his earpiece even though he had understood enough.

Cross and two agents pursued Dominic.

Gabriel stayed with Victor.

That choice mattered.

For years, Gabriel would have chased the enemy.

This time he stayed with his brother.

D'Amato sank into a chair.

"He will kill me."

Gabriel looked at him.

"Not if the government finds him first."

D'Amato laughed shakily.

"You still think Dominic is the worst thing in Antonio's archive."

Gabriel's expression changed.

"What does that mean?"

D'Amato looked at the phone Gabriel held.

"Play the recording."

Gabriel unlocked it.

The recording had started twenty-three minutes earlier.

It contained Dominic's statements.

It contained D'Amato's accusation.

It also contained something from before Gabriel entered the room.

Gabriel scrubbed backward.

Dominic's voice filled the phone.

"If Gabriel refuses, Cross gets the old red paper."

Nicholas asked, "The rejected version?"

Dominic answered, "Yes."

Chloe felt her pulse jump in the basement.

The original rejected authorization existed.

Dominic continued on the recording.

"Let her see Gabriel crossed out bodily pressure and wrote surveillance only."

"It will make him look cleaner."

"Then leak the Antonio files that prove what he did before that."

Gabriel's face tightened.

D'Amato had captured proof that Gabriel rejected the violent version.

But Dominic had also hinted at older crimes.

There was no clean escape from Gabriel's past.

Only a more accurate one.

Cross returned to the VIP room.

Her face was furious.

"He got through the pantry tunnel."

Gabriel looked toward the service door.

"There is no pantry tunnel."

Chloe heard him and looked at Marco's old building plans on the basement wall.

Then she saw a narrow line behind the wine cellar.

A sealed passage.

She grabbed the receiver.

"There is."

Gabriel looked toward the hidden camera.

"Where?"

"Old service tunnel behind the cellar."

"It exits near the river freight line."

Cross was already moving.

Beatrice grabbed Chloe's arm again.

She signed, "Dominic knows the building because Antonio owned it."

Chloe stared.

"Antonio owned Il Canto?"

Beatrice nodded.

"Before restaurant."

"Private club."

"Archive room below."

Chloe's heart jumped.

She turned to the old plan.

A small unlabeled chamber sat beside the tunnel.

"The archive."

Beatrice nodded.

"Vincent moved it somewhere quiet."

Chloe remembered his voicemail.

Mom always knew where the quiet things lived.

Il Canto was a place where Beatrice had been ignored while surrounded by conversation.

A cruelly perfect hiding place.

Chloe pointed at the basement wall.

"It's here."

One agent tried to stop her.

She was already moving.

Beatrice followed.

They crossed the kitchen basement to the old wine storage area.

A brick wall had been painted over decades earlier.

Beatrice ran her fingers along it.

Then she pointed at a carved stone near the floor.

Saint Michael's shield.

The same symbol as the chapel.

Chloe pressed it.

Nothing happened.

Beatrice signed, "Mirror."

Chloe looked around.

A narrow decorative mirror hung opposite the stone.

She pressed the reflected position on the other side of the wall.

A hidden latch clicked.

The brick panel opened inward.

Cold air moved out of the darkness.

Shelves lined the chamber.

Boxes filled them from floor to ceiling.

Antonio's archive.

Beatrice stood at the threshold.

Her face showed no triumph.

Only exhaustion.

Then a shadow moved inside.

Chloe stepped back.

Dominic emerged from behind the shelves.

He held a lighter in one hand.

In the other he held a bottle of accelerant.

"I wondered who would find it first."

Chloe's blood went cold.

Beatrice moved in front of her.

Dominic looked at his aunt.

Then he raised his hands.

He signed one sentence.

"You should have stayed silent."

Beatrice stared at him.

Then she smiled.

Her hands rose.

May you like

"I never was."
