Chapter 14 - The Brother Who Remembered Hands

Gabriel did not move toward him.
That restraint may have saved the moment.
The bearded man stood at the end of Chloe's hallway with fear in his eyes.
One guard still held his shoulder against the wall.
Chloe lifted a hand.
"Let him go."
The guard looked at Gabriel.
Gabriel nodded once.
The man stepped away immediately.
His gaze remained fixed on Chloe's hands.
Chloe signed, "My name is Chloe."
He watched.
Then he looked at Gabriel.
His brow tightened.
Gabriel whispered, "Vincent."
The man did not react to the name.
Chloe signed, "Do you know him?"
The man's eyes returned to Gabriel.
His hands moved uncertainly.
"Face."
Then he touched his chest.
"Dream."
Chloe translated.
Gabriel's mouth opened.
No sound came out.
The man signed again.
"Same face in dream."
Gabriel stepped closer by one pace.
The man backed away.
Gabriel stopped immediately.
"It's okay."
The words meant nothing if the man was not reading his lips.
Chloe signed, "He will stay there."
The man looked at her.
"Who are you?"
"Chloe."
"My brother was Leo."
At the name Leo, the man flinched.
Chloe's breath caught.
"You know Leo?"
His fingers trembled.
"Hands."
"Computer."
"Blue book."
Chloe stared at the dictionary she was still holding.
"You gave this to Leo?"
The man shook his head.
Then he pointed toward the book.
"He showed me."
Gabriel's breathing changed.
"Ask him his name."
Chloe signed the question.
The man looked confused.
"Victor."
Gabriel closed his eyes.
The name from the clinic.
Chloe continued.
"Do you remember another name?"
Victor touched his temple.
"Pain."
"Fire."
"Water."
"Mother."
Then his hands stopped.
He looked at Gabriel again.
"Gabe."
Gabriel's face broke.
No one had called him Gabe all night.
No one in his organization would have dared.
He stepped forward without thinking.
Victor backed into the wall.
Chloe caught Gabriel's sleeve.
"Slow."
Gabriel stopped.
He was breathing hard.
"He called me Gabe."
"I heard."
"Vincent called me that."
"I know."
"Nobody else did."
Victor watched them.
His eyes moved from Gabriel's face to Chloe's grip on his sleeve.
Then he signed, "Angry man."
Chloe frowned.
"Who?"
Victor pointed at Gabriel.
"Gabe angry."
He touched his own chest.
"Boat."
"Bait."
Gabriel stared.
The fishing-hook memory.
The scar.
The missing fingertip.
The private nickname.
None alone proved identity.
Together they pushed hope toward certainty.
Gabriel sank onto the stair landing.
He covered his face with both hands.
Victor watched him.
Then something in his expression changed.
He stepped closer.
One step.
Then another.
He reached out and tapped Gabriel's shoulder twice.
Gabriel looked up.
Victor signed, "Why sad?"
Gabriel did not know how to answer.
Chloe knelt beside him.
"Tell him slowly."
"I'll sign."
Gabriel looked at the man who might be his brother.
"My brother was gone for six years."
Chloe signed.
Victor watched.
"I thought he was dead."
Chloe signed.
"I think you may be him."
Victor's face emptied.
He backed away again.
"No."
The sign was immediate.
"Victor."
"I am Victor."
"Okay," Chloe signed.
"You are Victor right now."
Gabriel looked at her.
She kept her eyes on Victor.
"Nobody will force another name on you."
Victor's shoulders lowered slightly.
That mattered.
Matteo arrived twenty minutes later with Dr. Park.
She examined Victor only after he agreed.
She found old burn scars along his shoulder and ribs.
The missing fingertip matched family photographs.
A childhood surgical scar on his abdomen matched a hospital record Gabriel produced.
DNA would take time.
Nobody in the apartment needed it emotionally anymore.
Legally, they still did.
Victor sat at Chloe's kitchen table while Dr. Park took a cheek swab.
He kept glancing toward Gabriel.
Sometimes he smiled as if recognizing a feeling before the face.
Sometimes he looked terrified.
Chloe gave him the blue ASL dictionary.
His fingers traced the cracked spine.
Then he opened directly to the entry for MOTHER.
A tiny paper strip fell from the page.
Chloe picked it up.
It contained an address.
19 River Road, Newburgh.
Gabriel recognized it.
"The old mill."
Victor saw his lips.
His face changed.
He signed rapidly.
"No."
"Bad."
"Dark room."
"Dominic."
Everyone froze.
Chloe signed, "Dominic was there?"
Victor nodded violently.
"He took you there?"
Another nod.
"Recently?"
Victor struggled.
He touched his head.
"Time broken."
"Okay."
"Did you escape from him?"
Victor stared at the floor.
Then he signed, "Woman helped."
"Which woman?"
Victor's hands shaped white hair.
Then pearls.
Gabriel stood.
"Ma."
Chloe signed, "Beatrice?"
Victor nodded.
That made no sense.
Beatrice had not seen him for six years.
Unless she had.
Chloe asked, "When did she help you?"
Victor looked frustrated.
He could not find the sequence.
Then he pulled a folded receipt from his pocket.
The date was yesterday.
The location was a gas station three miles from the mansion.
On the back, someone had written in block letters.
GO TO CHLOE BENNETT.
SHE WILL UNDERSTAND YOUR HANDS.
The handwriting belonged to Beatrice.
Gabriel stared at the note.
"She knew he was alive before we did."
Chloe shook her head.
"Maybe only yesterday."
Victor tapped the paper.
Then he signed, "Car."
"Mother saw me."
"She gave paper."
"Man did not see."
Chloe understood.
During the kidnapping, Beatrice had seen Victor in the car beside Samuel.
She had secretly given him Chloe's address.
"She sent him away from the car."
Victor nodded.
"How did you get out?"
He signed, "Bathroom."
"Window."
Matteo almost laughed in disbelief.
"He climbed out at a gas station."
Victor looked proud for half a second.
Then his face collapsed.
He signed, "Mother still car."
Gabriel stood.
"We go now."
Matteo nodded.
"Teams are already near the mill."
Victor suddenly grabbed Chloe's wrist.
His grip was desperate.
He signed, "Not front."
"What?"
"Not front door."
"Fire under floor."
Gabriel looked at him.
"Explosives?"
Victor did not know the word.
He mimed a burst with both hands.
Matteo's expression changed.
"Trap."
Victor nodded.
Chloe looked at Gabriel.
The Newburgh meeting had always been a trap.
Beatrice had sent them the warning before they even knew Victor was alive.
Then Victor signed one more sentence.
"Dominic wants Gabe angry."
Chloe translated.
Gabriel looked at his brother.
Victor's eyes were frightened but clear.
"Why?" Chloe asked.
Victor touched his own chest.
Then pointed toward Gabriel.
May you like
Then signed, "Same mistake."
