CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH HIDDEN FOR A YEAR

CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH HIDDEN FOR A YEAR

Lucas could barely breathe.

The rain continued falling around them, but he didn't feel it.

His eyes remained locked on the twins.

The little boy laughed and pointed at a puddle.

The little girl clung to Emma's leg.

Both children had his eyes.

His smile.

Even the small dimple that appeared whenever they grinned.

"Emma..." he whispered. "Tell me the truth."

Emma's expression hardened.

"The truth?"

For the first time in over a year, anger flashed across her face.

"You divorced me because you thought I was a liar."

Lucas lowered his eyes.

"I know."

"You never listened."

"I thought I had proof."

Emma laughed bitterly.

"Proof?"

She opened her purse and pulled out a thick envelope.

"I kept these because I knew someday you'd finally ask questions."

Inside were medical records.

Original lab reports.

Emails.

Screenshots.

And one shocking document.

A forensic analysis proving every piece of evidence used during the divorce had been altered.

Lucas felt sick.

His hands trembled as he turned the pages.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Nathan Brooks.

His best friend.

His business partner.

The man who had convinced him Emma cheated.

"No..." Lucas whispered.

Emma nodded.

"Yes."

Lucas staggered backward.

Nathan had forged everything.

The messages.

The photos.

Even the fake paternity report.

"But why?"

Emma looked away.

"Because Nathan wanted something you never realized he wanted."

"What?"

"You."

Lucas frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

"He wanted your company."

Everything suddenly clicked into place.

Nathan had gained more control after the divorce.

More shares.

More influence.

More money.

Lucas felt physically ill.

One year.

He had lost his wife.

Missed the birth of his children.

Missed their first smiles.

Their first words.

Their entire first year.
