CHAPTER 1: THE BETRAYAL I THOUGHT WAS REAL
I THREW AWAY MY MARRIAGE BECAUSE OF A LIE. ONE YEAR LATER, I FOUND MY EX-WIFE RAISING TWINS WHO LOOKED EXACTLY LIKE ME.
CHAPTER 1: THE BETRAYAL I THOUGHT WAS REAL
The divorce decree sat between us like a gravestone.
Lucas Bennett couldn't stop staring at the woman across the courtroom.
The woman he once planned to grow old with.
The woman he now believed had destroyed everything.
Emma looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just heartbroken.
That somehow made it worse.
Because Lucas had seen the messages.
He had seen the photographs.
He had seen the medical records that supposedly proved she had lied to him.
And most importantly, he trusted the person who brought him the evidence.
His best friend.
His business partner.
The man he had known since childhood.
According to him, Emma had been having an affair for months.
According to him, the baby she was carrying couldn't possibly belong to Lucas.
According to him, everyone knew except him.
"Please," Emma said softly, her voice trembling. "You have to believe me."
Lucas clenched his jaw.
"I believed you for seven years."
"It's all fabricated."
"Stop."
The word came out sharper than he intended.
Emma flinched.
For a moment, silence filled the room.
Then she slowly wiped away a tear.
"I never betrayed you."
Lucas looked away.
Because part of him desperately wanted to believe her.
But every piece of evidence pointed in the opposite direction.
Every conversation.
Every rumor.
Every document.
Everything.
"You chose not to trust me," Emma whispered.
"No," Lucas replied coldly. "You gave me no reason to."
The pain that crossed her face nearly broke him.
Nearly.
But not enough.
The judge finalized the divorce.
And just like that, their marriage was over.
Emma walked away without looking back.
Within days, she disappeared completely.
No calls.
No messages.
No social media.
Nothing.
Lucas convinced himself it was for the best.
That she had gotten what she deserved.
That he could finally move on.
For twelve long months, he repeated that lie to himself.
Until one rainy afternoon.
Until one accidental encounter.
Until he saw Emma again.
Standing outside a small neighborhood clinic.
Holding the hands of two little children.
Twins.
A boy and a girl.
Both around ten months old.
Both with the same dark hair.
The same eyes.
The same smile.
The same face.
His face.
And in that moment, Lucas felt the ground disappear beneath his feet.
Because the impossible truth was staring directly back at him.
May you like
The children were his.
And someone had lied about everything.
