Chapter 1: The Ring That Should Have Been Buried

Daniel's fingers trembled as he accepted the old silver ring from the barefoot boy.

He turned it over.

Inside the band were three tiny engraved words.

Forever. Always. D.

His breathing stopped.

Only one person had ever owned a ring with that engraving.

Emily.

Five years earlier, Emily had disappeared without warning after telling Daniel she was pregnant. Her family insisted she had abandoned him. Months later, Daniel received documents declaring she had died in a boating accident overseas.

He mourned her.

Eventually, believing the past was gone forever, he rebuilt his life.

Until now.

"Where did you get this?" Daniel asked quietly.

The little boy swallowed.

"My mommy gave it to me this morning."

The bride, Victoria, suddenly stepped forward.

"Daniel, this is ridiculous. He's just a confused child."

But the boy shook his head.

"No."

He reached into his pocket and unfolded a worn photograph.

It showed Daniel and Emily laughing together beside a small lake years ago.

Written on the back were fresh words.

Trust no one standing beside you. I never left you willingly.

Daniel slowly looked toward Victoria.

Her calm smile had disappeared.

"What does this mean?" he asked.

Victoria's eyes darted toward the chapel doors.

For the first time all morning...

She looked afraid.
