Chapter 18 - The Choice on the Final Sunday

Summer evaluations began just as Nicole's hospital schedule shifted again.

Owen was invited to a weekend training group with strong coaches and a good development program.

The first session fell on a Sunday afternoon.

Old fear crossed his face when he read the schedule.

"What if I miss the first one?"

I helped him email the coordinator, explaining that he was available Saturdays and certain Sunday mornings but had a standing family commitment in the afternoons.

The coordinator responded that several players had family and school conflicts.

The program could offer alternate skill sessions without penalizing them for a disclosed schedule.

Owen read the message three times.

"That's allowed?"

"Different programs have different requirements," I told him. "The important thing is that they tell you up front and let you decide."

He chose to join.

Then he called Nicole and told her he still wanted their regular Sunday afternoon together.

They made plans to visit a small museum near her town.

At his next school game Scott appeared near the concession stand.

He asked me quietly whether Owen knew he was there.

I said he had seen him and hadn't asked him to leave.

Scott stayed away from the dugout, didn't offer instructions, and clapped for the whole team.

When Owen hit a line drive into left field, Scott applauded along with everyone else.

After the game he told Owen, "Nice hit."

Owen nodded.

"Thanks."

It was not forgiveness.

It was two words exchanged without fear.

Dad came over carrying three folding chairs and offered one to Nicole.

The easy courtesy felt almost strange after all the arguments over whether she belonged in a baseball story.

On the drive home Owen asked whether we'd still be a family if Scott never coached him again.

I told him of course we would.

Family was not a lineup that a coach could rewrite.

That night Owen put the seventh glove box on his desk.

He didn't open it.

But he didn't hide it away, either.

A week later he asked Grandpa to meet him at the public diamond on a Wednesday afternoon.

"Just you and me," he said.

Dad agreed immediately.

I watched Owen pick up the box before he left.

May you like

For the first time, the next step belonged entirely to him.
