Chapter 10 - The Coach Under Review

The board's preliminary findings arrived on a Friday afternoon.
Scott's account had submitted the player exit form without parent verification.
The language in that form could not be substantiated by any contemporaneous note from Owen.
The eligibility flag had been removed and recipients were notified it should not be used in an evaluation.
The board suspended Scott from team-related administrative access while it completed its review.
It did not remove him as coach at that stage.
I read the notice twice because I wanted to understand what it said rather than what I hoped it meant.
Nicole agreed that we should share the correction only with people who had received the harmful record.
Owen asked whether the letter meant his uncle would finally stop being angry.
"I can't promise that," I said.
That evening Scott came to my house unannounced.
I kept the screen door closed and told Owen to stay inside.
Scott accused me of turning the board against him.
"You could have called me like a brother," he said.
"I did. I asked who completed Owen's form."
"And you took everything out of context."
I told him the committee had seen the full documents, not just my description.
Scott said he was protecting the standards he'd built his program around.
I asked how falsely labeling a child protected a standard.
His face reddened.
"You don't understand what it's like to keep twenty families happy."
"You're right. But I know what it's like to keep one child safe."
He stared through the screen at me.
Then he said Dad was only apologizing because I had pressured him.
I said Dad could speak for himself.
Scott turned to leave, but stopped halfway down the porch steps.
"You think you're winning because Owen got into one showcase?"
I didn't answer.
"Wait until the summer tournament rosters come out."
After he drove away I wrote down exactly what he'd said.
I was tired of keeping records, tired of watching every adult conversation for a new threat.
But the next morning Coach Bell called.
A summer development program had suddenly withdrawn Owen's preliminary invitation.
The coordinator said she'd received an unfavorable reference from someone described only as a longtime family coach.

For the first time, I wondered how far Scott was prepared to go.
