Chapter 3 — The Empire Begins to Crack

Chapter 3 — The Empire Begins to Crack

Charles Whitaker stood in the grand foyer wearing a tailored charcoal suit.

Silver hair.

Perfect posture.

The smile of a man accustomed to obedience.

It disappeared the instant he saw Lily hiding behind Ethan.

"What is this?"

"We're late."

Ethan stopped halfway down the staircase.

"No."

"We're done."

Charles frowned.

"Excuse me?"

"My daughter isn't going anywhere with you."

The foyer fell silent.

Housekeepers froze.

The chauffeur stopped carrying gift boxes.

Even Meredith remained perfectly still at the top of the stairs.

Charles laughed.

"You've become emotional."

"You always were too soft."

Ethan walked down the remaining steps until only a few feet separated them.

"You hit my daughter."

Charles didn't blink.

"I disciplined her."

"No."

"You assaulted an eight-year-old."

Charles sighed impatiently.

"The Whitaker family has standards."

"Children learn through correction."

Ethan pulled out his phone.

One tap.

The screen illuminated.

Photograph after photograph appeared.

Purple bruises.

Finger-shaped marks.

Time stamps.

Charles stared.

Still without remorse.

"You should delete those."

Instead...

Ethan pressed another button.

A video began to play.

Hidden nursery camera footage.

Charles grabbing Lily by the arm.

Charles shoving her against the piano bench.

Charles squeezing her back while she cried.

Meredith standing in the doorway...

Watching.

Doing nothing.

The entire foyer listened in horrified silence.

One by one, employees lowered their eyes.

They had known.

And feared losing their jobs more than protecting a child.

Charles stepped forward.

"You recorded me?"

"I protected my daughter."

Ethan replied.

Then he made one final call.

"Detective Harris?"

"It's Ethan Cole."

"I'd like to report felony child abuse."

Charles Whitaker finally stopped smiling.
