Chapter 2 — The Man Who Controlled Everyone... Except a Father
Lily searched Ethan's face with frightened eyes.
For a long moment, she didn't answer.
Then, almost cautiously, she nodded.
"Yes..."
"...because you're here."
Those five words became the most important promise Ethan had ever heard.
He wrapped his daughter in the gentlest embrace he could manage, careful not to touch her bruised back.
"I'm taking you home."
"But..."
She looked toward the bedroom door.
"Mom said Grandpa will get angry."
Ethan smiled sadly.
"I don't care."
A knock sounded downstairs.
Three heavy knocks.
Charles Whitaker had arrived.
Meredith's cheerful voice echoed through the foyer.
"Dad! We're upstairs!"
Ethan stood.
Every movement was calm.
Every breath deliberate.
He picked up Lily's recital dress and folded it carefully into a garment bag.
Then he grabbed her favorite stuffed rabbit, Captain Blue.
No child should leave home without something that reminded her she was loved.
When he opened the bedroom door, Meredith was already climbing the staircase.
She froze.
"Why isn't Lily dressed?"
Then she noticed Ethan holding the garment bag.
"What are you doing?"
"We're leaving."
Her expression hardened.
"Don't embarrass my father."
Ethan looked directly into her eyes.
"I already know."
A flicker crossed Meredith's face.
Barely visible.
Gone within a heartbeat.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Lily told me."
Silence.
Meredith slowly glanced toward her daughter.
"Lily..."
"What exactly did you tell Daddy?"
Lily instinctively stepped behind Ethan.
That single movement answered every question.
Ethan's voice remained frighteningly calm.
"You'll never question her alone again."
Meredith folded her arms.
"She's dramatic."
"Children imagine things."
"They bruise themselves."
Ethan pulled out his phone.
"I took photographs."
Color drained from Meredith's face.
"You photographed her?"
"I documented evidence."
Downstairs, Charles Whitaker's deep voice echoed through the mansion.
"What's taking so long?"
Meredith lowered her voice.
"Please."
"You don't understand."
"No."
Ethan replied quietly.
"I finally do."
He took Lily's hand.
They walked past Meredith without another word.
For the first time in ten years...
Ethan Cole walked past the Whitaker family without asking permission.
