Chapter 9 - Evelyn's Second Letter

Ethan did not know about the second letter.
That became clear immediately.
He looked at Mercer, then at Clare, then at Vega.
"What letter?"
Mercer exhaled as though he regretted speaking too soon.
Vega stepped between them.
"Nobody is discussing new evidence with Ethan in a hallway."
Mercer nodded.
"Agreed."
Daniel looked at him.
"That may be the first thing we have agreed on."
Vega turned to Ethan.
"Your interview is finished for now."
"You can leave with Mr. Mercer if you are comfortable doing that."
Ethan looked at Clare.
"Can I go with Mom?"
The question hit every adult differently.
Clare felt hope.
Mercer looked unsurprised.
Vega looked thoughtful.
Daniel looked worried because court orders did not change based on hope.
"Not yet," Vega said gently.
Ethan's face closed.
"Why not?"
"Because the current order says you return to your father's residence."
"I am seventeen."
"I know."
"In eleven weeks I can leave whenever I want."
"Also true."
"Then why does eleven weeks matter?"
Vega's answer was quiet.
"That is one of the questions I am asking."
Ethan looked at Clare.
"Tomorrow?"
"We have court tomorrow," she said.
"I know."
He nodded once.
"Then tell the judge I want to live with you."
Clare's eyes filled before she could stop them.
"Tell Ms. Vega."
"I did."
He walked away with Mercer.
Daniel waited until the elevator doors closed.
"That matters."
Clare wiped beneath one eye.
"I know."
"Do not assume it decides everything."
"I know."
"I am saying it because your face currently thinks we won."
"My face is allowed one good minute."
Daniel almost smiled.
"One."
They called Whitaker from Daniel's conference room.
The old lawyer went silent when Clare mentioned the second letter.
"Aaron talks too much."
Clare leaned toward the speakerphone.
"Is there a letter for Ethan?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell us?"
"Because the instructions are specific."
"When does he get it?"
"When he asks me about the shadow ledger by name."
Clare felt a chill.
"He used that phrase today."
Whitaker paused.
"In what context?"
"He told me Grandma called something the shadow ledger."
"Did he ask what it was?"
Clare replayed the conversation.
"No."
"Then the condition has not been met."
Daniel rolled his eyes.
"Charles, this is not a scavenger hunt."
"Tell that to my dead client."
"I tried."
"She remains difficult."
Despite everything, Clare almost smiled.
Then Whitaker's voice became serious.
"Do not prompt Ethan to ask."
"Why?"
"Because Evelyn's condition requires his independent curiosity."
"She wanted to know whether Nathaniel had introduced the concept or whether Ethan had discovered it through another path."
Clare frowned.
"Why would that matter?"
"Because the shadow ledger may not exist."
Silence.
Daniel leaned back.
"What?"
"Evelyn sometimes used the phrase as a test."
"A test of what?"
"Whether someone claimed knowledge they did not have."
Clare thought of Nate.
"So it could be bait."
"Possibly."
"Or it could refer to something real."
"Also possibly."
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"I hate wealthy families."
Whitaker ignored him.
"Evelyn believed secrecy had damaged the Holloways for generations."
"She also believed sudden disclosure could be dangerous."
"So she created thresholds."
"If Ethan asks me directly, he gets the letter."
"Until then, we leave it alone."
Clare hated the answer.
She accepted it.
Before Caleb's interview, Ethan sent Clare a short message from the other side of the office suite.
Do not let Caleb think I told on him.
Clare read it twice.
She replied with one sentence.
You are not responsible for managing his feelings before he even has them.
The typing bubble appeared.
Then vanished.
A minute later Ethan wrote back.
I know.
The words looked less like certainty than practice.
Caleb entered Vega's room angry and came out exhausted.
He refused to tell Clare what he had said.
She did not ask.
That seemed to confuse him.
"You don't want to know?"
"I want you to have one conversation that belongs to you."
Caleb searched her face for a trick.
"What if I said bad things about you?"
"Then I hope they were honest bad things."
"That is a weird answer."
"I am having a weird month."
He almost smiled.
Owen's interview was shorter.
When he came out, he immediately asked whether he could have a snack.
Megan handed him crackers from her purse.
Lily stared at her aunt.
"Why do you have crackers?"
"Because your family keeps having emergencies during meal times."
Owen ate half the packet before sitting beside Clare.
"I told her about Dad grabbing Ethan."
Clare nodded.
"Okay."
"I told her Mr. Mercer saw."
"Okay."
"I told her I took the drive."
"Okay."
Owen frowned.
"Can you say something besides okay?"
Clare put an arm around him.
"I am proud you told the truth even when it made you uncomfortable."
He leaned into her.
"Better."
At eleven, Vega interviewed Caleb.
At one, she interviewed Lily.
At two, Owen.
Clare was not told what the children said.
That was the point.
At four, Vega requested another emergency conference with Judge Marwick.
This time both parents appeared by video from their attorneys' offices.
Vega's recommendation was direct.
All four children should reside temporarily with Clare at Megan's home or another agreed residence until a fuller evaluation could be completed.
Nate's attorney objected immediately.
Judge Marwick asked why Vega had changed her position so quickly.
Vega listed the reasons without drama.
Ethan wanted to reside with Clare.
Owen expressed fear of being alone with his father after witnessing the confrontation with Ethan.
Caleb described repeated discussions framing sibling relationships as competition.
Lily described the dinner and confirmed Nathaniel had told Clare to select one son.
All four children independently described succession-related conversations occurring before the divorce filing.
Three children described cameras or monitoring in the home as making them afraid to speak freely.
Nate's attorney argued that a high-security household naturally had extensive surveillance.
Vega responded with one sentence.
"Children should not have to leave school or climb through a broken fence to feel unwatched."
Judge Marwick went silent.
Clare looked at Nate's small image on the screen.
He looked furious.
The judge issued a modified order.
Ethan, Caleb, Owen, and Lily would reside with Clare for fourteen days.
Nate would have supervised parenting time at a neutral family center until further hearing.
Neither parent could discuss business succession, trust matters, or the divorce with the children outside the presence of counsel or the guardian when necessary.
The children would continue school.
Security arrangements would be coordinated jointly.
Nate's attorney requested a stay.
Denied.
He requested that the children remain at the Holloway residence until the next morning.
Denied.
He requested that Mercer supervise transfer.
Vega spoke first.
"I have no objection to Mr. Mercer coordinating logistics."
That surprised Clare.
The judge agreed.
At 5:45 p.m., Clare stood in Megan's driveway as two SUVs arrived.
Ethan got out first.
He carried one duffel bag and a backpack.
Caleb followed with three bags because Caleb had never packed lightly in his life.
Owen came out of Megan's front door and ran toward them.
The three brothers collided in a clumsy hug they immediately pretended had not happened.
Lily stood in the doorway and shouted, "I get the upstairs bathroom first."
Caleb shouted back, "You have been here two days."
"Exactly."
For a moment, the divorce disappeared.
Clare watched all four children argue over bedrooms and felt something unclench in her chest.
Then Nate stepped out of the second SUV.
Clare had not expected him.
Neither had Daniel, who was standing near the garage.
Mercer moved quickly.
"Mr. Holloway is permitted to say goodbye."
Daniel checked the order on his phone.
"Two minutes."
Nate looked at his children.
"I will see you soon."
No one answered immediately.
Then Lily said, "Okay."
Nate looked at Ethan.
"Take care of them."
Ethan's face hardened.
"Mom is here."
The sentence landed like a closed door.
Nate turned toward Clare.
"This is temporary."
"Everything is temporary."
He stepped closer.
"You think you are protecting them."
"I am giving them somewhere they can speak."
"You are teaching them to distrust me."
Clare shook her head.
"You did not need my help."
Nate's mouth tightened.
He walked back toward the SUV.
Then Ethan spoke.
"Dad."
Nate turned.
Ethan stood beside the driveway, both hands in his jacket pockets.
"What is the shadow ledger?"
The world seemed to stop.
Mercer's face went blank.
Clare felt Daniel shift beside her.
Nate did not answer for several seconds.
Then he said, "Who taught you that phrase?"
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"Grandma."
Nate looked at Clare.
"What have you been telling him?"
"Nothing."
"Do not lie to me."
Ethan stepped forward.
"She did not tell me."
Nate ignored him.
His anger stayed fixed on Clare.
"You have no idea what that phrase can do."
Clare felt the chill return.
"Then maybe you should answer your son."
Nate looked at Ethan.
His voice became very quiet.
"It is a story your grandmother should have buried."
He got into the SUV.
The door closed.
Ethan watched it leave.
Then he turned to Clare.
May you like
"Grandma said if Dad ever answered like that, I should call Mr. Whitaker."
