Chapter 8 - The Man in the Middle

Clare did not sleep that night either.
She sat at Megan's dining table with a copy of the trust documents and kept reading Aaron Mercer's name until the letters stopped looking like a name.
Alternate Trust Protector.
The man who had come to Megan's house after midnight to retrieve Lily.
The man who had stood beside Nate while their children were questioned.
The man who had watched Nate grab Ethan's shirt and done nothing, according to Owen.
Evelyn had trusted him enough to place the children's inheritance in his hands if Clare could not serve.
Nothing made sense.
At 6:15 a.m., Megan came downstairs in a robe and found Clare still awake.
"Coffee?"
"Already had three."
"That is not an answer."
Megan poured another cup anyway.
"Maybe Evelyn was wrong about him."
Clare looked at the document.
"Evelyn was wrong about plenty of things."
"She raised Nate."
Megan winced.
"Fair."
Clare rubbed her eyes.
"But she was not careless with paperwork."
"If Mercer was her alternate, there was a reason."
"Maybe the reason changed."
At 7:02, Daniel called.
"Do not contact Mercer."
Clare sighed.
"Good morning to you too."
"I mean it."
"I have not contacted him."
"Nathaniel's petition to remove you claims you are using trust authority to retaliate for the divorce."
"I have not exercised any authority yet."
"Which is why his argument is weak."
"Keep it weak."
"What about Mercer?"
"Whitaker confirmed the alternate appointment."
Daniel paused.
"That complicates things."
"Thank you for the advanced legal analysis."
"You are welcome."
She heard papers moving.
"Vega interviews Ethan at ten."
"Caleb at eleven."
"Lily at one."
"Owen at two."
"Neither you nor Nate will be present."
Clare hated that and loved it.
Her children deserved one adult conversation neither parent could shape.
"What happens after?"
"Vega makes recommendations."
"Temporary custody hearing is tomorrow morning."
Clare looked toward the stairs.
"Can she recommend the boys come with me?"
"Yes."
"Will she?"
"I do not know."
"Stop asking me to predict people who have not finished gathering facts."
Clare almost laughed.
"You would be unbearable at poker."
"I am excellent at poker."
"I just do not play with clients."
Before the interviews began, Lily surprised everyone by asking to speak to Vega first.
"Why?" Clare asked.
Lily tightened the straps of her backpack.
"Because the boys keep getting to be first because their problems are louder."
Clare stopped.
Vega looked at Lily with immediate attention.
"Do you want to go first?"
"Yes."
"Then you can."
Lily looked at Clare.
"You are not mad?"
"Why would I be mad?"
"Dad says changing the order makes everything harder."
Clare crouched in front of her.
"Sometimes changing the order is exactly what makes things fair."
Lily considered that and nodded.
She entered the interview room with Vega and stayed forty-seven minutes.
Clare spent every one of them wondering what her daughter had noticed while adults focused on the boys.
When Lily came out, her eyes were dry but serious.
She sat beside Clare.
"Ms. Vega asked if I think Dad loves me."
Clare was careful.
"What did you say?"
"Yes."
"Okay."
"Then she asked if I think Dad listens to me."
Lily looked down.
"I said not unless I know something he wants."
Clare's chest tightened.
She did not rush to correct the feeling.
"Thank you for telling her the truth."
Lily leaned against her arm.
"I wish Grandma was here."
"Me too."
"She listened even when I was talking about boring things."
"That is because nothing you said was boring to her."
Lily looked up.
"Even when I explained all the horses in my game for an hour?"
Clare smiled.
"Especially then."
Lily's mouth twitched.
Then she whispered, "I told Ms. Vega Dad searched my room after Grandma died."
Clare went still.
"You saw him?"
"Not Dad."
"Mr. Mercer."
"He put everything back wrong."
"How did you know?"
Lily looked almost offended.
"My stuffed rabbit faces the window."
"He put her facing the door."
Clare felt another piece of evidence arrive through the memory of a child adults had underestimated.
At ten, Clare waited at Daniel's office while Vega met Ethan in a separate suite.
Nate waited two floors below with his attorneys.
The building staff had deliberately separated them.
Ethan arrived with Mercer.
Clare saw them through the glass doors.
Ethan looked tired.
His right hand was bruised across the knuckles.
Clare stood automatically.
Daniel touched her elbow.
"Do not approach unless he approaches you."
Ethan saw her.
For a second, his expression softened.
Then he looked at Mercer.
Mercer stepped away and stared at his phone.
Ethan crossed the lobby.
"Hi."
Clare looked at his hand.
"What happened?"
"Wall."
"I heard."
"Of course you did."
He sounded embarrassed.
Clare resisted the urge to take his hand.
"Are you okay?"
"Physically?"
"Any way that matters."
He looked at her.
The same question from the house.
This time there was no ceiling camera.
"No."
Clare's throat tightened.
Ethan glanced at Daniel.
"Can I talk to Mom alone?"
Daniel looked toward Mercer.
"Not about litigation."
"I know."
Daniel moved to the far side of the lobby.
Ethan sat beside Clare.
"Dad told me you are trying to take the company from him."
"I am not."
"He said Grandma made you trust protector."
Clare nodded.
"That is true."
"Did you know before the divorce?"
"No."
Ethan studied her.
"Would you tell me if you did?"
"Yes."
He looked down at his bruised hand.
"Dad says everybody lies once enough money is involved."
"Your father thinks fear and money explain every decision."
"Sometimes they do."
"Not every one."
Ethan was quiet.
Then he said, "I made copies of the files on Dad's drive."
Clare's heart kicked hard.
She kept her voice level.
"Why?"
"Because the files were about us."
"Did Dad ask you to copy them?"
"No."
"Did I?"
"No."
"Did anyone?"
"No."
Clare glanced toward Daniel.
He was pretending not to listen and failing.
"Where are the copies?"
Ethan shook his head.
"I do not want to tell you."
Clare forced herself not to react.
"Okay."
He looked surprised.
"Okay?"
"Yes."
"You do not need to trust me with the location."
"Tell Ms. Vega what you did."
"Let her decide what happens next."
Ethan stared at her.
"Dad would demand it."
"I am not Dad."
Something changed in his face.
It was not relief exactly.
It was the first small proof that Clare's refusal to control him mattered.
"There is something else," he said.
"What?"
"Dad asked me last month which brother would follow me if I became head of the family."
Clare felt cold.
"What did you say?"
"Neither."
"He did not like that."
"What did he say?"
"He said leadership is knowing who will obey before you give the order."
Clare closed her eyes briefly.
"Ethan, do you want to run the Holloway businesses?"
He laughed quietly.
"I do not even know what the Holloway businesses are."
Clare looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
"I know the public companies."
"Logistics."
"Commercial real estate."
"Hospitality."
"But Dad keeps talking about the family like it is something bigger than that."
Clare did not answer.
She had spent nineteen years deliberately not asking questions that might force Nate to answer in ways she could never forget.
Everyone in their social circle knew Holloway influence extended beyond boardrooms.
Few people said more than that.
Ethan continued.
"He wants me to inherit something he refuses to describe."
"That is not inheritance."
"That is a trap."
Ethan looked at her sharply.
Then Vega opened the conference-room door.
"Ethan, I am ready."
He stood.
Before walking away, he leaned down and whispered, "Grandma called it the shadow ledger."
Clare went still.
Ethan entered the room and closed the door.
Daniel sat beside her.
"What did he say?"
Clare looked at him.
"Have you ever heard the phrase shadow ledger connected to the Holloways?"
Daniel's face lost all humor.
"No."
"But I have heard enough family-law stories involving hidden financial records to dislike it already."
Two floors below, a commotion began in the lobby.
Voices rose.
A door opened hard.
Then Aaron Mercer appeared at the top of the stairs leading from the lower level.
He walked directly toward Clare and Daniel.
His face was pale.
"Mrs. Holloway, I need to speak to you privately."
Daniel stood.
"No."
Mercer ignored him.
"This is not about the divorce."
"Then say it here."
Mercer's eyes moved toward the conference room where Ethan was meeting Vega.
"Nathaniel knows about the backup."
Clare's heart stopped.
"How?"
"I do not know."
"He just ordered the house searched."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Ordered whom?"
Mercer looked at him.
"His private security team."
"For a device belonging to a minor child?"
"For any digital storage."
Clare felt panic rise.
"Caleb is at the house."
Mercer nodded once.
"Not anymore."
"What does that mean?"
"I sent him to school with another driver before I came here."
Clare stared at him.
"Why are you helping us?"
Mercer's expression tightened.
"I am not helping you."
"I am doing what Evelyn asked me to do if Nathaniel ever crossed a line she thought he would cross."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Which line?"
Mercer looked toward the conference room again.
"Searching his children's rooms for evidence against them."
Clare could barely process it.
"You told Nate about the trust amendment."
Mercer did not deny it.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Evelyn told me to."
Clare stared.
"She told you to reveal it?"
"Only after Nathaniel filed to remove you."
"He filed because he knew."
Mercer shook his head.
"He filed because Whitaker's office sent formal activation notice to the trustee panel, which includes Nathaniel."
Clare turned toward Daniel.
Daniel frowned.
"That tracks."
Mercer continued.
"Evelyn expected him to challenge you."
"She wanted him to."
"Why?"
"Because challenging you opens discovery into his conduct as trustee."
Daniel went completely still.
Mercer looked at Clare.
"Your mother-in-law built a trap."
Clare felt the room narrow around her.
"For her own son?"
"For whoever tried to use the children to control the trust."
"She hoped it would never be Nathaniel."
Mercer's voice became quieter.
"But she planned as if it would."
Clare thought of Evelyn's line about always having one more move.
"What is the shadow ledger?"
Mercer's face changed.
That was answer enough.
"You know."
"I know the phrase."
"What is it?"
He looked toward Daniel.
"Not here."
"Then where?"
Mercer hesitated.
"Ask Whitaker about Evelyn's second letter."
Clare's pulse jumped.
"There was a second letter?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't he give it to me?"
Mercer's eyes hardened.
"Because you are not the person it was written to."
"Who was it written to?"
The conference-room door opened.
Ethan stepped out with Vega.
Mercer looked directly at him.
May you like
"Ethan."
