Chapter 5 — The Promise That Was Kept

One year later, family and close friends gathered in the estate garden.

Not for a trial.

Not for another confrontation.

For Leo's first birthday.

Golden afternoon sunlight covered the lawn as children played beneath white balloons.

Sophia carried Leo toward me.

He had taken his first steps only weeks earlier.

Now he waddled forward with determination before tumbling into my waiting arms.

Everyone laughed.

Sophia slipped her hand into mine.

"You saved us."

I shook my head.

"No."

I looked at both of them.

"We saved each other."

Later that evening, after the guests had gone home, I stood quietly on the porch.

The same porch where I had once returned from war expecting peace...

Only to discover another battle waiting inside.

This time, the house behind me was filled with gentle laughter instead of cries.

Sophia rocked Leo to sleep while soft music drifted through the open windows.

I realized something then.

Justice wasn't revenge.

Justice was making sure the people you love never had to live in fear again.

I closed the front door.

Locked it.

And for the first time since returning home...

May you like

It truly felt like home.

The End.
