Chapter 2 — The Evidence They Never Knew Existed

The front door swung open before Eleanor could utter another excuse.

Two Military Police officers entered first.

Behind them came a Child Protective Services investigator carrying a thick case file, followed by my attorney, Richard Hayes, with a leather briefcase in one hand.

Silence swallowed the house.

Eleanor forced a brittle smile.

"This is ridiculous. Lucas, what have you done?"

"I finished what you started."

The lead Military Police officer approached me first.

"Sergeant Lucas Carter?"

"Yes."

"Is your wife and child safe to leave with medical personnel?"

"They are now."

A team of paramedics hurried inside. One immediately examined Leo while another carefully helped Sophia onto a stretcher.

Sophia reached for my hand.

"I thought... you weren't coming back."

I squeezed her fingers gently.

"I promised I'd come home."

Her tears finally came.

Not from fear.

From relief.

Meanwhile, Eleanor stepped between the investigators and the staircase.

"This is a family misunderstanding."

Richard calmly opened his briefcase.

"It stopped being a family matter the moment assault, unlawful imprisonment, and child neglect became crimes."

Audrey laughed nervously.

"You don't actually have proof."

Richard slid several photographs across the dining table.

Bruises.

Hospital reports.

Medical records documenting repeated injuries.

Bank transfers showing Eleanor draining the household account while Lucas was overseas.

Then came printed screenshots.

Messages Eleanor had deleted from Sophia's phone.

Unfortunately for her...

Cloud backups never forget.

The CPS investigator looked at Eleanor.

"Did you prevent Mrs. Carter from seeking medical treatment for her infant?"

"No."

Sophia whispered from the stretcher.

"They hid my car keys... and took my phone."

The investigator slowly nodded.

Everything matched the evidence.

Then Richard produced one final item.

A small memory card.

"The nursery camera."

Audrey's smile disappeared.

"I unplugged it."

Richard looked directly at her.

"You unplugged the monitor."

He slid the camera itself onto the table.

"It continued recording to internal storage."

The room became perfectly still.

Every second...

Every insult...

Every bruise...

Every threat...

Had been preserved.

For six weeks.

The Military Police officer quietly looked at Eleanor.

"I advise you not to say another word."

May you like

For the first time that night...

She finally looked afraid.
