Chapter 4 — The Truth Sophia Had Hidden

That evening, after doctors stabilized Leo, Sophia finally felt safe enough to tell me everything.

She never cried.

Her voice remained almost emotionless.

Sometimes the deepest pain leaves no tears.

She explained how everything had changed only two weeks after my deployment.

Eleanor took control of the house.

She removed Sophia's access to the bank accounts.

She dismissed the nanny.

She canceled doctor's appointments.

She told neighbors Sophia was suffering from postpartum depression so no one would believe her if she asked for help.

When Sophia tried to leave, Audrey stood in front of the door.

"You won't ruin this family."

Sophia managed to send only three emails to her father before they confiscated her phone.

Those emails became the first evidence that started the welfare investigation.

I reached into my pocket.

"I have something for you."

She looked confused.

I handed her a small velvet box.

Inside rested the wedding ring she had stopped wearing after Eleanor claimed it belonged to the Bennett family.

It had never belonged to my mother.

I slid it gently back onto Sophia's finger.

"This family begins and ends with us."

For the first time in months...

She smiled.
