Chapter 2 — The Door They Never Expected to Open

No one spoke.

The silence lasted only a few seconds.

Then the front door opened.

Two military police officers entered first.

Behind them came two detectives from the county sheriff's department, a Child Protective Services investigator, and finally my attorney, Daniel Foster, carrying a thick leather briefcase.

The color drained from my mother's face.

"What is the meaning of this?" Eleanor demanded.

Daniel calmly removed several folders.

"The meaning is simple."

He placed the property deed on the dining table.

"This residence legally belongs to Sergeant Lucas Bennett."

He slid another document beside it.

"Mrs. Eleanor Bennett's right to occupy this property expired the moment she committed abuse against another lawful resident."

Audrey laughed nervously.

"You can't prove anything."

I looked at the nursery camera mounted above the bookshelf.

"I can."

The detective pressed a remote.

A portable monitor lit up.

The first recording showed Eleanor ripping Sophia's phone from her hands.

The second showed Audrey locking the front door after Sophia begged to take Leo to the hospital.

The third recording silenced everyone.

Sophia, crying while holding her burning baby.

Eleanor grabbing her by both arms.

"You'll stay exactly where I tell you."

The bruises matched perfectly.

Then another recording played.

Audrey dumping fresh baby formula into the sink.

"If he's hungry, let him cry."

The CPS investigator immediately stepped forward.

"That's enough."

She looked directly at Eleanor.

May you like

"You are both under investigation for child neglect and unlawful confinement."

Neither woman smiled anymore.
