CHAPTER 3: THE SECRET THEY TRIED TO HIDE

That night, after every guest had gone home, Daniel sat alone in his study.

He couldn't sleep.

He opened the household security records.

Then the nanny reports.

Then the night-shift logs.

Hour after hour...

The truth unfolded.

Emma's name appeared again...

...and again...

...and again.

2:13 a.m.

Oliver crying.

Emma responded.

3:47 a.m.

Nightmare.

Emma comforted him.

5:08 a.m.

Fever.

Emma stayed beside his bed until sunrise.

Not once had she written those reports herself.

The security staff had.

Daniel's hands trembled.

He called the head butler.

"Why wasn't I told?"

The old man hesitated.

"You were, sir."

Daniel frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"Every report was placed on your desk."

Daniel searched the cabinet.

Nothing.

The butler lowered his head.

"Your personal assistant always collected your paperwork before you arrived."

The realization hit like lightning.

Someone had been hiding the truth.

The next morning Daniel reviewed months of office surveillance.

There she was.

His trusted assistant.

Removing childcare reports.

Replacing them with financial documents.

Later that afternoon she confessed.

"I thought you needed someone sophisticated beside you."

"I believed a maid would only distract you."

"So I made sure you never noticed how important she had become."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Not because he was angry.

Because he understood something even worse.

He hadn't been deceived only by another person.

He had allowed work, pride, and ambition to blind him to what mattered most.
