CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE SILENCE

The mansion remained frozen.

No one dared breathe.

The little boy refused to let go of Emma, burying his tiny face against her shoulder as though the world outside her embrace no longer existed.

Daniel Reed slowly walked closer.

His voice was barely audible.

"Answer me."

Emma kept her eyes lowered.

"I never wanted to come between you and your son, sir."

"That's not what I asked."

A long silence followed.

Finally she whispered,

"Almost every night."

The words struck Daniel harder than any accusation.

"When Mrs. Harper was hired as the night nanny, she stayed only three weeks."

"When the second nanny came... she resigned after a month."

"The third spent more time on her phone than with Oliver."

Emma gently stroked the little boy's hair.

"So when he woke up crying... I went."

She looked ashamed instead of proud.

"I only wanted him to sleep."

Daniel stared at his son.

Memories flooded back.

The late-night business meetings.

The overseas trips.

The promises of "tomorrow."

Tomorrow had become three long years.

One of the glamorous women finally broke the silence.

"So she's just a servant."

Emma nodded quietly.

"Yes."

"But children don't choose servants."

She looked down at Oliver sleeping peacefully against her shoulder.

"They choose the people who make them feel safe."

No one argued.

Because no one could.

For the first time in years...

Daniel realized he knew almost nothing about his own child.
