Chapter 24 - Grace’s Last Seven Minutes

Ethan listened at the police office.

He did not bring Sophie.

Not this time.

The recording began twelve minutes before the crash.

Grace was driving.

Rain struck the windshield.

She called Richard.

“Where is Sophie?”

Richard answered.

“At the lake house.”

“Who took her?”

“I don’t know.”

“You said you saw her.”

“I said someone matching her description was seen.”

“You liar.”

Silence.

Grace knew.

She had realized the trap while already driving.

Richard said.

“Turn around if you want.”

Grace answered.

“You know I can’t trust that she’s safe.”

“Then keep driving.”

Grace’s voice trembled.

“I know about Claire.”

Richard went silent.

“I found her.”

“You shouldn’t have.”

“I’m going to see her tomorrow.”

“No.”

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.”

“She has a life.”

“Because you stole mine from hers.”

Richard’s voice changed.

“You’re becoming dramatic.”

“Tell me something.”

“What?”

“Did you forge the adoption consent?”

Silence.

Grace answered herself.

“You did.”

Richard said.

“Dad wanted it.”

“You signed my name.”

“He wanted the problem solved.”

“My daughter was not a problem.”

Richard’s voice became cruel.

“Neither was I.”

Grace stopped speaking.

Ethan closed his eyes.

There it was.

The wound beneath everything.

Richard continued.

“He erased me.”

“And you helped him erase my child.”

“I was twenty-three.”

“I know.”

“I regret it every day.”

“Good.”

Grace whispered.

“I loved you.”

Richard laughed.

“That was never enough.”

Grace’s breathing became uneven.

The car made a faint mechanical sound.

Grace muttered.

“No.”

Richard asked.

“What?”

“The brakes.”

Silence.

Grace pressed the pedal.

The sound worsened.

“Richard.”

He said nothing.

“Richard, the brakes aren’t working.”

Ethan gripped the table.

Grace knew.

Richard knew.

Then Grace said.

“Celeste.”

Richard remained silent.

“She cut the line.”

Still nothing.

“You told her to.”

Richard finally spoke.

“You should have listened when she warned you.”

Ethan felt ice in his chest.

Direct knowledge.

Direct manipulation.

Grace shouted.

“You told me Sophie was missing.”

“You made a choice.”

“You knew.”

“I knew you’d drive.”

Grace breathed hard.

Then something extraordinary happened.

She stopped talking to Richard.

She began talking to Ethan.

Even though Ethan was not on the call.

“Ethan.”

Her voice shook.

“If anyone finds this.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I should have told you.”

The road noise grew louder.

“I love you.”

Then.

“Sophie.”

“My beautiful girl.”

“None of this is because of you.”

Ethan covered his face.

Grace continued.

“Never let anyone make you believe love requires fear.”

A horn blasted.

Grace screamed.

Metal.

Glass.

The recording ended.

There was no ambiguity left.

Richard had known the brakes were compromised.

He had deliberately lured Grace into the car.

He had listened while she lost control.

He had done nothing.

Mara said quietly.

“That’s our case.”

Ethan nodded.

He could not speak.

The trial changed after discovery of the audio.

Richard’s attorneys sought a plea.

Prosecutors offered nothing lenient.

Richard eventually accepted a deal removing the possibility of endless appeals in exchange for life imprisonment on the murder charge plus concurrent sentences for the remaining offenses.

He insisted on making a statement.

Ethan attended sentencing.

Claire attended.

Anna did not.

Lucas watched remotely.

Celeste appeared separately for her own case.

Richard stood before the judge.

He looked older.

Smaller.

“I spent my life believing something had been taken from me.”

He paused.

“I was right.”

Ethan watched.

“My childhood was built on lies.”

“My mother was used.”

“I was hidden.”

“A wealthy man treated my existence like a scandal.”

Richard looked toward Ethan.

“But none of that forced me to become what I became.”

Ethan was surprised.

Richard continued.

“I could tell you I wanted justice.”

“Sometimes I did.”

“Eventually I wanted victory.”

“There is a difference.”

He looked toward Claire.

“I stole years from you.”

Then toward Ethan.

“I took Grace.”

His voice broke slightly.

“And I tried to take Sophie.”

He looked down.

“I have no defense for that.”

The judge imposed life imprisonment.

No dramatic shouting.

No last-minute escape.

A door closed.

Richard disappeared behind it.

For Ethan, the silence afterward felt unfamiliar.

For years there had always been another clue.

Another fear.

Another secret.

Now there was only life.

Then Celeste’s sentencing approached.

Lucas asked Ethan to attend with him.

Ethan agreed.

Before the hearing, Celeste handed Lucas an envelope.

“What is it?” he asked.

“Something I wrote when you were born.”

Lucas stared.

“You kept it?”

“No.”

“Grace did.”

Ethan looked at the envelope.

Grace had protected one more piece of someone else’s history.

Lucas opened it.

His face changed.

Inside was not only Celeste’s letter.

There was a photograph of Grace holding newborn Lucas.

And beneath it Grace had written.

One day, these children need to know none of them were mistakes.
