Chapter 15 - Ethan Loses Everything

By the next morning, Richard had already acted.
The bearer certificate was transferred into a corporation registered in Liechtenstein.
Lawyers filed an emergency claim asserting ownership.
News outlets picked up the story.
Hale Holdings stock dropped twelve percent before noon.
Then federal investigators arrested Ethan.
The charge was not related to Richard’s new company.
It was the fraudulent eighteen-million-dollar transfer.
Aurora’s forensic report had not yet been formally admitted.
Ethan was photographed leaving headquarters in handcuffs.
Richard could not have planned the image better.
CEO accused of international financial fraud.
Missing family assets.
Custody questions.
Dead wife’s fortune.
The press turned tragedy into spectacle.
Ethan spent seven hours in custody.
His attorneys secured release.
When he returned home, Sophie was waiting at the window.
She ran into his arms.
“Are they taking you away?”
“No.”
“But the TV said—”
“The TV doesn’t know everything.”
She looked terrified.
“Richard said people would think you were bad.”
Ethan knelt.
“Look at me.”
She did.
“You never have to decide whether you love me based on what strangers say.”
Sophie nodded.
“But I know you’re not bad.”
That almost broke him.
The board removed Ethan as acting CEO that evening.
Temporary.
Pending investigation.
Still devastating.
Richard had taken his reputation.
His company authority.
The billion-dollar certificate.
Almost his daughter.
Ethan sat alone in Grace’s underground room after midnight.
For the first time, he understood despair.
Not dramatic despair.
Quiet exhaustion.
The feeling that every door led to another trap.
Nora found him.
“Mrs. Grace used to sit right there.”
Ethan looked up.
“She should have told me.”
“Yes.”
He was surprised by the answer.
Nora sat nearby.
“She should have.”
“I should have noticed more.”
“Probably.”
Ethan almost smiled.
“You’re not very comforting.”
“Mrs. Grace never paid me to lie.”
He looked at her.
Nora continued.
“She loved you.”
“But you both had blind spots.”
“Richard was yours.”
“Fear was hers.”
Ethan looked toward the files.
“What if I can’t fix this?”
“You already did the important part.”
“What?”
“You opened the suitcase.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Nora was right.
Everything after Sophie being safe was secondary.
Money.
Company.
Reputation.
Even Grace’s mystery.
Important.
But secondary.
Then Sophie appeared barefoot at the doorway.
“Why are you awake?”
“I heard Mommy.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
Sophie held the silver locket.
“The video.”
“I watched it again.”
“You shouldn’t use the computer alone.”
“I know.”
She looked guilty.
Then she said.
“Mommy said storms can be beautiful.”
“Yes.”
“She didn’t mean the lighthouse.”
“We know.”
“She meant something else too.”
Ethan crouched.
“What?”
“Mommy used to make me draw storms.”
Sophie walked to an old cabinet.
She pulled open the bottom drawer.
Inside were children’s drawings Ethan had never noticed.
Storm clouds.
Houses.
A lighthouse.
One page had black scribbles and a yellow sun.
Sophie pointed.
“This one.”
Grace had written something on the back.
Ethan turned it over.
Sophie, storms are loud.
But after them, look for what the rain reveals.
Below it was a faint watercolor pattern.
A map.
The lighthouse chamber.
The chest.
And a second mark beneath the floor.
Ethan stopped breathing.
Richard had found the chest.
He had not found what lay beneath it.
They returned before dawn.
Under the concrete slab beneath the chest was another compartment.
Inside was not the certificate.
It was a notarized cancellation document.
Grace had already invalidated the bearer certificate.
Two months before her death.
The paper Richard stole was worthless.
The real mineral rights had already been transferred into a protected foundation.
Ethan laughed for the first time in days.
Richard had moved an empty title.
He did not own eight hundred million.
He owned a piece of paper.
Then Mara called.
“Ethan.”
“What?”
“We have another problem.”
“What now?”
“Richard just released a video.”
Ethan’s smile disappeared.
“What video?”
“Grace.”
Ethan went still.
Mara continued.
“She’s talking about the mineral rights.”
“And in the video, she says something that makes it look like you helped her hide assets from federal taxes.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
May you like
Richard had turned Grace’s protection into evidence against Ethan.
And this time the video appeared completely authentic.
