One year later, the courtroom was filled with smiles.
Friends, social workers, and fellow police officers gathered to witness the final adoption hearing.
The judge reviewed the documents and smiled warmly.
"Emily and Lily, how do you feel about Officer Daniel becoming your father?"
Emily looked at Daniel.
Then at Lily sitting happily on his lap.
She smiled.
"He already is."
The room erupted into laughter and tears.
The judge signed the papers.
With a single stroke of a pen, the little girl who once wandered cold streets alone finally had a home.
Outside the courthouse, reporters asked Daniel why he had chosen to adopt the sisters.
He looked down at Emily and Lily holding his hands.
"I didn't save them," he said quietly. "Emily saved Lily every single day. I just happened to find them."
