Chapter 2: An Unexpected Bond
Over the following weeks, Officer Daniel visited Emily and Lily every chance he got.
The girls were temporarily placed with a caring foster family, but Emily remained anxious.
One afternoon, Daniel found her sitting quietly in the garden.
"What are you worried about?" he asked.
Emily stared at the ground.
"They'll take Lily away when she gets older."
Daniel sat beside her.
"No one is taking your sister away from people who love her."
For the first time, Emily smiled.
As months passed, Daniel became a constant presence in their lives. He attended school meetings, helped Emily with homework, and brought Lily stuffed animals that made her laugh.
The foster family loved the girls, but they were elderly and unable to adopt permanently.
One evening, Daniel looked around his empty apartment and realized something.

After many conversations, background checks, and legal procedures, Daniel made the biggest decision of his life.
He filed paperwork to become their adoptive father.
