Chapter 2 – The Secret He Carried Alone
The grieving mother could barely breathe.
Her trembling fingers hovered inches from the baby's tiny face.
The resemblance was unmistakable.
The same soft brown hair.
The same delicate nose.
Even the tiny dimple on his left cheek mirrored the one her son had carried since birth.
She stumbled backward.
"My son... never told me about you."
The young woman lowered her eyes.
"He wanted to."
Her voice cracked.
"But he never got the chance."
Silence settled over the cemetery.
Only the wind whispered through the rows of white headstones.
"My name is Emily," the young woman finally said. "We met two years ago while volunteering at a children's hospital. Your son never cared that I had nothing. He loved me anyway."
The older woman stared in disbelief.
"He spoke about his family all the time. He wanted us to meet after he finished paying off his debts."
"Debts?" the mother whispered.
Emily nodded.
"He secretly worked two jobs because he wanted to buy a house before introducing me to you. He kept saying he wanted to give his child a better childhood than he had."
Tears filled the mother's eyes.
She had believed her son spent those late nights working overtime.
She never knew why.
Now she did.
Emily slowly reached into her bag and handed over a worn leather wallet.
Inside was a folded ultrasound photo.
On the back, written in her son's handwriting, were the words:
"Our greatest adventure begins today."
The grieving mother's knees nearly gave out.
For the first time since the funeral...

She realized she had not buried all of her son's dreams.
One of them was sleeping peacefully in Emily's arms.
