Chapter 10 - THE HOUSE IN ARIZONA

The property sat twelve miles outside Sedona.

Abandoned.

Half-collapsed.

Surrounded by desert and red stone.

Vanessa had lived there briefly with Daniel Mercer.

The deed had been transferred through three shell companies after Daniel disappeared.

The final company connected directly to Victor Sloan.

Federal agents secured the area before Ethan arrived.

Ortiz did not want him there.

He insisted.

Sophie remained under protection with Caroline.

This time the security team came entirely from federal personnel outside the compromised local chain.

No one connected to Avery knew the location.

The house smelled of dust and old wood.

Vanessa entered wearing restraints and surrounded by agents.

She stopped inside the doorway.

Her face went pale.

“I haven’t been here in twenty-three years.”

Lucas stood several feet away.

The two saw each other.

Vanessa froze.

Lucas did not.

“You look surprised.”

he said.

Vanessa stared at his scar.

“You should be dead.”

Lucas smiled sadly.

“You said that before.”

Agents moved between them.

Vanessa looked away.

They searched the house.

Nothing in the main rooms.

No archive.

No money.

No body.

Then Vanessa led them downstairs.

The basement contained an old concrete floor.

One wall had been added after Daniel disappeared.

Vanessa pointed.

“There.”

Agents used imaging equipment.

A cavity existed behind the wall.

They opened it carefully.

Inside were metal cases.

Computers.

Hard drives.

Documents.

Victor’s archive.

More than two decades of crimes.

Ortiz stood staring at shelves filled with labeled boxes.

Each box had a name.

Dates.

Photographs.

Some belonged to people who were still alive.

Others belonged to people who had died in accidents.

The archive could expose an entire network.

Then an agent found a box labeled MERCER.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Inside were photographs of Daniel.

Receipts.

Medical records.

A bloodstained shirt sealed inside plastic.

Vanessa turned away.

Ethan watched her.

“You didn’t know?”

She shook her head.

Ortiz opened another folder.

A handwritten note from Victor.

Mercer refused payment demand.

Subject became violent toward V.R.

Removal completed 02:14.

Body relocated.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Lucas stared at her.

“Victor killed him.”

She whispered.

“He told me Daniel left.”

“You knew he might be dead.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You still stayed with Victor.”

Vanessa looked at Lucas.

“I was afraid.”

“For six years?”

“For years.”

“Then you asked him to do the same thing to me.”

Vanessa had no answer.

The archive contained one more surprise.

Video.

Victor had recorded himself talking to Daniel before his death.

Daniel was bruised.

Angry.

He accused Victor of manipulating Vanessa.

Victor accused Daniel of abusing her.

Daniel denied it.

The truth was impossible to determine completely.

Then Victor said.

“She wants out.”

Daniel answered.

“Then she can leave.”

Victor smiled.

“No.”

“She wants your money too.”

Vanessa turned pale.

The video cut.

Ethan looked at her.

“You told Victor you wanted Daniel’s money.”

“I was nineteen.”

“You keep saying that.”

“I was terrified.”

“You can be terrified and still make choices.”

Vanessa looked down.

No one argued with that.

The search continued.

Behind another wall agents found a shallow burial area.

Vanessa began shaking.

Ethan looked away as investigators worked.

Hours later, identification confirmed human remains.

Daniel Mercer.

After twenty-three years, the first missing husband had been found.

Vanessa sat outside beneath the desert sky.

For a long time she said nothing.

Then she asked Ethan.

“Is Sophie okay?”

He stared at her.

“You don’t get to ask me that.”

Her face tightened.

“I know.”

“No.”

“You don’t.”

She looked down.

“I loved her sometimes.”

Ethan felt anger rise.

“You don’t hurt someone every day and call the moments between it love.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

Ethan walked away.

Inside, investigators found the master recording archive.

Victor’s voice appeared in hundreds of files.

So did Avery’s.

Keene’s.

Other officials.

Bankers.

Lawyers.

Private investigators.

People who had helped hide crimes.

The case was much larger than anyone expected.

Yet Victor remained missing.

The archive contained no current location.

No active phone.

No escape plan.

Then a technician found a live system.

One computer had recently connected remotely.

Less than two hours earlier.

Victor knew the archive had been found.

He was watching.

Ortiz looked at the connection log.

“He knows we’re here.”

Ethan’s phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A message.

Nice house, isn’t it?

Then another.

Vanessa always hated the basement.

Ortiz immediately ordered everyone’s phones secured.

A third message arrived before Ethan could hand his over.

Ask her about Rachel.

Ethan froze.

Rachel Bennett had been Sophie’s biological mother.

Ethan had not said her name throughout the investigation.

Rachel had died two years before Ethan met Vanessa.

Cancer.

Nothing suspicious.

Nothing connected to this nightmare.

At least that was what he had always believed.

He stared at the message.

“Rachel?”

Vanessa looked up.

Her reaction was immediate.

Ethan saw it.

Recognition.

Fear.

He crossed the yard.

“What does Victor mean?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“What does he mean?”

“I don’t know.”

“You reacted.”

“I knew her name.”

“How?”

“You told me.”

“No.”

Ethan’s voice hardened.

“I almost never spoke Rachel’s name when we first met because Sophie struggled afterward.”

Vanessa said nothing.

“How did you know her name before we met?”

Silence.

Lucas looked from Ethan to Vanessa.

Then he understood.

“You were studying him.”

Ethan stared at Vanessa.

“You started watching me before Rachel died?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“No.”

“When?”

No answer.

“WHEN?”

Ortiz stepped closer.

Vanessa finally whispered.

“Six months before.”

Ethan felt as though the desert had disappeared beneath his feet.

“You knew I was married.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Rachel was sick.”

“Yes.”

“Victor selected me while my wife was dying.”

Vanessa began crying.

Ethan stepped back in horror.

He remembered Rachel’s final months.

Hospital rooms.

Treatment.

Sophie sleeping against his chest.

His wife telling him she was afraid he would be alone.

All while Vanessa and Victor watched from a distance.

“You watched my family.”

“Yes.”

“You watched my wife die.”

Vanessa covered her face.

Ethan could barely speak.

“Did you do anything to Rachel?”

Vanessa looked up immediately.

“No.”

“Swear it.”

“I never touched her.”

“Victor?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because her illness was already terminal.”

The answer was horrifyingly practical.

Ethan turned away.

Victor had not needed to harm Rachel.

He only needed to wait.

Wait for Ethan to become vulnerable.

Wait for grief.

Wait for loneliness.

Then send Vanessa.

It was not romance.

It was acquisition.

Ortiz approached.

“We found something.”

Ethan turned.

A technician carried a laptop.

“Victor’s remote connection wasn’t only viewing the archive.”

“What did he do?”

“He downloaded a file.”

“Which?”

The technician showed them.

BENNETT – FINAL CONTINGENCY.

“What is that?”

Ethan asked.

“We don’t know.”

“File was encrypted.”

“Victor took the only readable copy.”

Vanessa suddenly stood.

The agents moved.

“What?”

Ortiz asked.

Vanessa looked terrified.

“I know what it is.”

“Tell me.”

“It’s the plan if everything fails.”

Ethan stared.

“What plan?”

May you like

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“The plan to destroy you.”
