Chapter 15 - The Witness Who Vanished

Three days before the scheduled evidentiary hearing, Cynthia stopped answering calls.

Her phone went directly to voicemail.

Ruth tried the number Cynthia had provided for emergencies and learned that she'd left the apartment where she was staying.

No one could say where she'd gone.

The uncertainty frightened me more than any argument with Diane.

We reported the concern through appropriate channels and avoided inventing a story about what had happened.

By evening Cynthia sent a brief email.

She was safe.

She had gone to stay with family after receiving messages that scared her.

She attached screenshots and asked that her location not be disclosed.

One message said that people who lied about respectable families often regretted it.

Another referenced an address she hadn't shared with Diane.

Ruth preserved the messages and referred them to investigators.

The lawyer told me Cynthia could testify remotely or under other arrangements if the court permitted.

I thought about the younger mover, who had simply shown up to do a job.

About the hospital nurse who had checked Emma's heartbeat while Eric collected my details.

About Cynthia, whose careless signature had turned into a threat.

Every person around the deception had been pulled into it.

Meanwhile Eric started sending late-night messages.

Some apologized.

Some accused.

One said, If you would just forgive Mom, everything could go back to normal.

I stared at that sentence longer than I should have.

Normal had been a house full of quiet betrayals I hadn't known how to see.

Normal had been loving a man who counted on my trust as an obstacle he could exploit.

I wasn't going back.

On the eve of the hearing, Ruth received a packet from the lender's investigator.

It contained a dated presentation prepared for investors.

The first slide showed a photograph of my house.

The second showed its estimated market value.

The third described an acquisition strategy based on a cooperative family transfer.

The presentation had been shared months before Emma's birth.

At the bottom of the final slide was an initials-only approval field.

E.L.

I recognized the initials.

Then I saw the filename.
