Chapter 9 - THE GHOST INSIDE VALE INDUSTRIES

The security footage showed a man in a baseball cap entering Vale Industries through the underground parking garage at 6:12 p.m.

His access card belonged to Ethan Cole.

The man kept his face turned away from every camera.

At 6:21, Ethan’s old credentials accessed the archive server.

At 6:29, more than two hundred gigabytes of files were copied.

At 6:33, the man left.

The board called an emergency security meeting.

Adrian joined from Chicago.

Claire joined from Washington.

Richard joined from California.

Ethan did not join at all.

“Freeze every credential.”

Adrian said.

“They already are.”

The chief information officer answered.

“Was anything deleted?”

“No.”

“Modified?”

“Still checking.”

Claire leaned closer.

“What exactly was copied?”

The CIO hesitated.

“Historical Whitmore records.”

“Security invoices.”

“Legacy shareholder correspondence.”

“And recent forensic materials.”

Richard spoke.

“So Cole stole confidential documents.”

Claire looked at him.

“You seem eager for that conclusion.”

“He disappeared.”

“His credentials were used.”

“His apartment is empty.”

“What would you call it?”

“A reason to investigate.”

Richard smiled thinly.

“You always did enjoy that word.”

Adrian interrupted.

“Enough.”

Richard looked surprised.

Adrian continued.

“We don’t know Ethan did anything.”

“You defended him yesterday.”

“I said we investigate.”

“You sound like Claire now.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Maybe because she was right about some things.”

Richard stared.

The meeting went quiet.

Claire did too.

She had not expected Adrian to say that publicly.

Richard slowly leaned back.

“Careful.”

Adrian laughed.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“That voice.”

“The one where you remind everyone you’re dangerous.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“I built what you have.”

“Did you?”

The question landed like a blade.

Adrian continued.

“Or did Evelyn?”

Richard disconnected.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Just gone.

Claire exhaled.

Adrian looked at her through the screen.

“I’m going back to California.”

“Why?”

“To find Ethan.”

“You’re suspended.”

“From financial authority.”

“Not from walking into my own company.”

“Technically not your own.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“There she is.”

Claire’s expression remained flat.

“Don’t.”

His smile disappeared.

“Right.”

After the meeting, Claire received another call.

This time from Noah’s preschool in La Jolla.

She answered immediately.

“Mrs. Vale?”

“Yes.”

“This is Lauren from Seaside Academy.”

“Is everything okay?”

“Yes.”

“We received a request for Noah’s attendance records.”

Claire stiffened.

“From whom?”

“A family law investigator representing Mr. Vale.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Adrian had said he was stopping the emergency petition.

Apparently his legal team had not stopped collecting ammunition.

“What records?”

“Attendance.”

“Pickups.”

“Parent conference participation.”

“Medical forms.”

Claire almost laughed.

Those records would hurt Adrian far more than her.

Still, the invasion angered her.

“Please send everything through counsel.”

“Of course.”

Then Lauren hesitated.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“A man came to the school yesterday.”

Claire’s heart stopped.

“What man?”

“He said he was from a security company.”

“He asked whether Noah still attended.”

Claire stood.

“Did anyone tell him?”

“No.”

“Our receptionist called me.”

“I asked for identification.”

“He left.”

Claire’s mouth went dry.

“Do you have cameras?”

“Yes.”

“Send footage to my attorney immediately.”

Maya was already moving.

Within twenty minutes, the image arrived.

Claire stared.

The man wore sunglasses.

Gray jacket.

Baseball cap.

Same build as the person who entered Vale Industries.

Maya enlarged the still.

“Recognize him?”

“No.”

Claire’s phone buzzed.

Adrian.

She answered.

“Did your investigator go to Noah’s school?”

“What?”

“Yesterday.”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“My attorneys requested records.”

“They didn’t send anyone.”

Claire looked at Maya.

“A man claiming to be security asked whether Noah still attended.”

Silence.

Adrian’s voice changed.

“Send me the photo.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“I’ll send it to the police.”

“Send it to me too.”

“Why?”

“Because I think I know him.”

Claire froze.

“Who?”

“Send it.”

She did.

Ten seconds later, Adrian called back.

“His name is Victor Shaw.”

“Who is he?”

“My father’s former driver.”

Claire’s blood went cold.

“What does your father’s former driver want with my son?”

“I don’t know.”

“You keep saying that.”

“I know.”

“Find out.”

“I will.”

Adrian ended the call.

Three hours later, he entered the Vale family estate without knocking.

Richard was not home.

Eleanor sat in the library.

She looked exhausted.

“Where is he?”

Adrian asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Victor Shaw went to Noah’s preschool.”

Eleanor stood.

“What?”

“You know him?”

“Yes.”

“Why would Dad send him?”

“I don’t know.”

Adrian looked toward the hall.

“Where does Dad keep Northstar files?”

Eleanor’s face changed.

“I’ve never seen them.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

She hesitated.

“Wine cellar.”

Adrian stared.

“What?”

“There’s a locked room behind the cellar.”

“He keeps personal archives there.”

They went downstairs.

Eleanor entered a code.

The hidden door opened.

Inside were filing cabinets.

Hard drives.

Photographs.

Adrian’s stomach turned.

Some photographs showed executives.

Competitors.

Politicians.

Former employees.

Then Claire.

Dozens of photographs.

Claire at a grocery store.

Claire dropping Noah at preschool.

Claire meeting Maya.

Claire entering a bank.

Adrian’s hands began to shake.

“He had her followed.”

Eleanor covered her mouth.

“I didn’t know.”

Adrian pulled open another drawer.

A file marked COLE, DANIEL.

Inside was a photograph of Ethan’s father.

Employment records.

A lawsuit.

A settlement.

And a death certificate.

Adrian read.

Cause of death.

Cardiac arrest.

Then he saw a handwritten note clipped behind it.

E.C. employed.

Keep close.

Adrian stared.

His father had known exactly who Ethan was when he hired him.

Eleanor whispered.

“Richard hired Ethan?”

“Yes.”

“But Ethan thought—”

“I know.”

Adrian turned another page.

A surveillance report from four years earlier.

ETHAN COLE COMMUNICATIONS WITH EVELYN WHITMORE ESTATE COUNSEL.

Adrian’s heart pounded.

Richard had been watching Ethan for years.

Another file sat behind it.

SAVANNAH REED.

Adrian froze.

He opened it.

Background check.

Bank records.

Employment history.

Apartment lease.

Photographs.

Richard had known about Savannah before Claire did.

At the bottom was a note.

Useful pressure point on A.V.

Adrian stepped backward.

His affair had not merely been discovered.

It had been monitored.

Possibly encouraged.

His father had known.

Maybe even benefited.

Eleanor whispered.

“There’s another drawer.”

Adrian opened it.

NOAH VALE.

His entire body went cold.

He ripped the file open.

Preschool schedule.

Doctor.

Nanny.

Favorite park.

Photographs.

And a typed contingency plan.

IF C.W.V. ACTIVATES RESTORATION CLAIM.

1.Establish Adrian as primary financial parent.

2.Challenge relocation.

3.Seek temporary restriction over minor heir.

4.Explore trust guardianship implications.

Adrian’s vision blurred.

Minor heir.

Not grandson.

Not Noah.

Heir.

He grabbed the file.

His phone rang.

Claire.

He answered.

“You were right.”

“What?”

“My father had Noah followed.”

Silence.

Claire’s voice turned terrifyingly quiet.

“How much?”

“Everything.”

“I’m sending photos.”

“Call the police.”

“I will.”

“Adrian.”

“What?”

“If Richard comes near my son—”

“He won’t.”

“You cannot promise that.”

Adrian looked at the contingency document.

“No.”

He whispered.

“But I can tell you what he wanted.”

“What?”

Adrian read the final paragraph.

His stomach dropped.

“Claire.”

“What does it say?”

May you like

“He wasn’t planning to take your trust.”

“He was planning to control it through Noah.”
