CHAPTER 8 — THE ACCIDENT

Maria agreed to speak only after detectives promised protection.

She had worked for my family for fourteen years.

The night before my father’s death, she saw Arthur inside the garage.

He was crouched near the front wheel of my father’s car.

When she asked what he was doing, he told her the tire looked low.

The next afternoon, my father’s brakes failed on a steep road.

Police ruled it an accident caused by mechanical deterioration.

Maria wanted to tell me what she had seen.

Arthur reached her first.

He showed her photographs of her undocumented nephew and threatened to have the young man deported if she spoke.

Then he paid her to leave the city.

“I was afraid,” she whispered. “But I kept something.”

From a locked box beneath her bed, Maria removed a small digital memory card.

My father had given it to her the week before he died.

“He said if anything happened, I should hide it.”

The card contained the rest of the recording.

My father’s voice came first.

“I know about Serena. I know about Marcus. Stay away from Claire.”

Then Arthur answered.

“You don’t decide who she loves.”

“You don’t love her.”

“No. But she has something I need.”

My father threatened to expose him.

Arthur laughed.

“You should be careful driving tomorrow.”

The recording stopped.

No direct confession.

But combined with Maria’s testimony, the financial motive, and the garage sighting, it was enough to reopen the investigation into my father’s death.

Arthur was questioned again.

This time, he refused to answer.

His attorney called the recording unreliable.

He claimed it had been edited.

But the same experts who examined Serena’s synthetic files confirmed that my father’s recording was authentic and continuous.

Arthur’s charges expanded.

The court denied bail.

For the first time, fear appeared in his face.

Then investigators found Marcus Hale.

He had been hiding in a private rehabilitation facility under a false name.

Marcus agreed to cooperate in exchange for protection.

He admitted setting the office fire.

He admitted helping Arthur create the shell companies.

He admitted introducing him to Blackstone Harbor Partners.

But when detectives asked about my father’s death, Marcus demanded an attorney.

Hours later, he offered a deal.

He would testify against Arthur if prosecutors reduced the arson charge.

During the proffer session, Marcus described the plan.

Arthur had loosened a brake line.

Marcus had followed my father’s car.

When the vehicle crashed, Marcus removed a folder from the wreck before emergency services arrived.

“What was in the folder?” I asked.

Marcus looked at the prosecutor.

“Evidence against Blackstone Harbor.”

“Where is it now?”

“Serena has it.”

“And where is Serena?”

Marcus hesitated.

Then he said something that made the room go silent.

“She didn’t run because she was afraid of being arrested.”

“Then why did she run?”

“Because Arthur put a contract on her.”

Arthur wasn’t just trying to escape responsibility.

He was eliminating everyone who could prove what he had done.

And Serena had the one file that could bring down the entire operation.
