Chapter 5: The Knock at the Door

The sudden chime of the doorbell echoed through the quiet house, shattering the suffocating silence that had settled over the kitchen.

On the live camera feed, Arthur jumped as if he had been physically struck. He dropped his phone onto the counter—where the panicked voice of his business partner continued to squawk uselessly from the speaker—and spun around to face the hallway.

"Arthur?" Marcus’s voice squeaked from the phone. "Arthur, are you still there? What’s happening? Who’s at the door?"

Arthur didn't answer. He hurried out of the kitchen and into the entryway, his footsteps frantic against the hardwood floor. Through the wide-angle camera lens of the smart doorbell, I watched him approach the front door, his hand trembling as he reached out and grabbed the brass knob.

He pulled the door open, expecting to find federal marshals or police officers serving warrants.

Instead, standing on the porch was a tall, impeccably dressed woman holding a thick manila envelope and a digital tablet.

It was Victoria’s senior paralegal, Sarah.

Arthur stared at her, blinking in confusion, his chest heaving. "Who the hell are you? What do you want?"

Sarah didn't flinch. She maintained a calm, professional composure, her expression entirely devoid of emotion.

"Mr. Arthur Vance?" she asked, her voice carrying clearly through the intercom.

"Yes," Arthur snapped defensively. "And unless you have business here, get off my property before I call the police."

"You don't need to call them, Mr. Vance. They’re already aware of my presence," Sarah said smoothly. She held up the thick manila envelope. "My name is Sarah Jenkins, representing Caldwell & Associates Law Firm, legal counsel for Mrs. Evelyn Vance. I am here to serve you with official notice of emergency legal proceedings."

Arthur stepped back, holding up a hand as if trying to physically ward off the words. "Legal proceedings? No. There's been a mistake. Where is Evelyn? I want to talk to my wife."

"Your wife is currently safe and unavailable," Sarah replied without missing a beat. "Furthermore, pursuant to the emergency protective order issued by the magistrate two hours ago, you are legally prohibited from attempting to contact, locate, or approach Mrs. Vance under any circumstances. Violation of this order will result in immediate physical arrest."

She stepped forward, sliding the manila envelope across the threshold and letting it drop onto the entryway floor.

"Contained within this packet," Sarah continued, her tone crisp and unyielding, "you will find notice of the immediate temporary restraining order, an emergency freeze on all personal and corporate assets tied to your name, a formal notice of default regarding your outstanding promissory notes with Vanguard Holdings, and a petition for sole ownership transfer of this residential property."

Arthur stared down at the envelope lying at his feet as if it were a explosive device. "This property is mine," he stammered, his voice cracking with desperation. "I signed the mortgage! I pay the bills! She has no right—"

"The mortgage was funded entirely through a private secondary trust established by the late Thomas Vance," Sarah interrupted, her voice cutting through his denial like a scalpel. "The deed was transferred into Mrs. Vance’s exclusive sole ownership three years ago. You were merely listed as an authorized occupant. As of 5:00 PM today, that authorization has been revoked."

Sarah turned on her heel, descending the front porch steps with calm, deliberate grace, leaving Arthur standing alone in the doorway with his entire life unraveling at his feet.

Inside the safe house, I watched the monitor as Arthur slowly backed into the house, his shoulders slumping as the last vestiges of his arrogance drained away. He looked smaller, older, and utterly defeated.

"He’s breaking," Victoria observed quietly, watching the feed beside me. "The reality of what he's lost is finally setting in."

"He hasn't lost everything yet," I said, my voice cold and steady as I looked at the secondary file open on my screen—the one detailing Brooke’s involvement and the upcoming corporate audit scheduled for Monday morning. "He still thinks Brooke is his ally. He still thinks he can salvage something by leaning on her."

Victoria raised an eyebrow. "What’s Brooke’s next move when she realizes Arthur can't bail her out of her salon scam?"

A slow, humorless smile touched my lips. "That, Victoria, is the most entertaining part of all. Brooke is about to discover that rats don't just abandon a sinking ship—they turn on each other first."
