Chapter 13 - AVA'S LAST VOYAGE

The words AVA WAS HERE looked as if Emily had written them while moving.

The letters tilted downward across the paper.

A second object sat inside the waterproof sleeve.

A torn corner of a shipping manifest.

Rachel flattened it against the hood of the utility vehicle.

One line remained readable.

PASSENGER: A. CARTER.

VESSEL: HM VANGUARD.

DATE: THREE DAYS BEFORE COLLISION.

Frank stared at the date.

"Ava was on Harrow's ship before she died."

I felt cold spread through me that had nothing to do with the wind.

"She never told me."

Rachel looked at me.

"She was investigating your father's network without telling you."

"That seems to have been a theme."

The bitterness came out before I could stop it.

Frank looked away.

He had no right to look guilty on Ava's behalf.

I pointed toward the harbor office.

"Get me a boat."

"Michael," Frank said.

"A real one."

"Not one of my father's hidden toys."

Rachel pulled the copied recovery string from her pocket.

"We do not need to guess where Vanguard is."

She tore open the bottom edge of the paper.

A tiny tracking wafer fell into her palm.

Frank stared at her.

"You put a tracker in the fake key."

"I assumed Harrow might take it."

"You could have mentioned that."

Rachel looked at him.

"You could have mentioned your secret deal."

He had no answer.

She opened an application on a backup phone one of the state officers had brought.

A signal pulsed on the map seven miles offshore, moving south along the coast.

HM Vanguard.

I called the Coast Guard through a number my attorney would have preferred I did not possess.

For once, I did not care who owed me favors or why.

I told them a kidnapped infant and civilian were aboard a private medical vessel.

That changed the conversation quickly.

Twenty-two minutes later, we were on a patrol boat cutting through rough water.

Two federal officers came with us.

Frank stood at the stern beside Rachel.

They did not speak.

I watched Boston shrink behind us and thought about Ava boarding the same ship months earlier.

What had she learned there?

Why had she hidden it from me?

The answer I feared most was simple.

She had not trusted me.

Emily had accused me of treating ignorance like innocence.

Ava may have reached the same conclusion before her death.

The Coast Guard officer beside me pointed ahead.

"Vessel at two o'clock."

A white ship appeared through mist.

HM VANGUARD was painted across the stern.

It looked like a research vessel.

Clean lines.

Medical insignia.

Satellite equipment.

Nothing about it suggested kidnapping.

That was Harrow's talent.

He wrapped terrible things in respectable surfaces.

The patrol boat hailed Vanguard.

No answer.

They hailed again.

Still nothing.

The tracking signal showed the fake key aboard.

We drew alongside.

A Coast Guard boarding team went first.

Frank tried to follow.

An officer stopped him.

"Federal operation from here."

Frank looked at me.

I almost enjoyed his frustration.

Then a radio crackled.

"Upper deck clear."

"No crew visible."

Another transmission came.

"We have medical equipment below."

I stepped forward.

"My son?"

The officer raised a hand.

"Wait."

I was finished waiting.

I crossed the boarding bridge before anyone could physically stop me.

Frank and Rachel followed.

The lower medical deck smelled sterile and recently cleaned.

A treatment bay stood open.

Inside was an infant warmer.

Empty.

Noah's hospital blanket lay on the mattress.

I picked it up.

A tiny brown stain marked one corner from the formula he had spit up days earlier.

It was his.

"He was here," Emily's voice seemed to whisper inside my head.

Rachel found a used pediatric monitoring lead in the waste container.

"Recent."

The Coast Guard medic examined it.

"Very."

Frank checked a second room.

"Michael."

I went to him.

A chair had been bolted to the floor.

One fabric restraint hung from the arm.

A blue thread was tied around it.

Emily.

Beside the chair sat a tablet.

Its screen showed a paused video file.

I pressed play.

Ava appeared.

She was sitting in that exact chair.

The date matched the shipping manifest.

Harrow's voice came from off camera.

"You came alone."

Ava looked toward him.

"That was the condition."

"Your husband would be furious."

"My husband is frequently furious."

I almost smiled despite everything.

That was Ava.

Harrow stepped into frame.

He looked exactly as he had beneath pier fourteen, except his hair was slightly darker and there was less exhaustion around his eyes.

"What do you want?"

Ava placed a folder on the table.

"Northreach."

Harrow laughed softly.

"Northreach is dead."

"Seven children are dead."

His smile faded.

"That is a different statement."

"I found Vantage."

Harrow's face became still.

"You found a dormant corporation."

"I found shipments."

"I found money."

"And I found Claire Parker."

Emily's sister's name filled the tiny room.

Ava leaned forward.

"Her archive still exists."

Harrow studied her.

"If that were true, your husband would already have burned half the state looking for it."

"Michael does not know."

That sentence hurt even though I expected it.

Harrow seemed surprised too.

"You are investigating your own family without telling him."

"I am investigating his father."

"Thomas is dead."

"His systems are not."

Harrow leaned against a counter.

"What do you want from me?"

Ava's voice became colder.

"Stop moving NRX-17 through Carter companies."

"Or?"

"I take everything to federal prosecutors."

Harrow smiled again.

"With what evidence?"

Ava tapped the folder.

"Enough to make you nervous."

The video jumped forward twelve minutes.

Ava was standing now.

Harrow blocked the door.

"You do not understand what Thomas built."

"I understand exactly enough."

"No."

Harrow shook his head.

"You think Michael inherited an empire."

"He inherited a hostage situation."

"Explain."

"Politicians, judges, executives, doctors, police commanders."

"Thomas kept evidence on all of them."

"The Crown Ledger was not merely accounting."

"It was insurance."

Ava's face changed.

"Who has it?"

Harrow smiled.

"That is why you will leave this ship and forget this conversation."

The video ended.

Rachel stared at the blank screen.

"Ava knew about the ledger."

"Not where it was," Frank said.

Emily's recovery key had been the missing answer.

I checked the tablet for other files.

Dozens of recordings appeared.

Harrow had recorded meetings for years.

Politicians.

Physicians.

Executives.

My father.

Frank.

I opened the one with Frank's name.

The date was the day before Ava's crash.

Frank appeared in a warehouse office talking to Daniel Krell.

My pulse accelerated.

Krell's scarred hand rested on the desk.

"She knows about Vantage," he said.

Frank looked furious.

"How much?"

"Enough."

"Harrow wants it handled tonight."

Frank stood.

"No."

Krell smiled.

"That is not your decision."

"Ava is Michael's wife."

"Which is exactly why Harrow cannot risk her reaching him."

Frank stepped close to Krell.

"Listen to me."

His voice dropped.

"Make sure Ava never reaches Michael."

The video ended there.

I stared at the screen.

Frank stood behind me.

Rachel whispered.

"Dad."

He looked as if somebody had struck him.

I turned slowly.

"You said what?"

Frank raised both hands.

"That recording is cut."

"I heard you."

"You heard half a conversation."

"You told the man who sabotaged my wife's car to make sure she never reached me."

"That is not what I meant."

I hit him.

He crashed into the wall.

The Coast Guard officers moved toward us.

Rachel stepped between them.

"Wait."

I grabbed Frank and hit him again.

"She trusted you."

"Michael, listen."

"She was my wife."

"I was trying to hide her."

I stopped.

"What?"

Frank wiped blood from his lip.

"Krell had already been ordered to take her."

"I told him to make sure she never reached you because I wanted him to believe I was helping."

"The rest of the recording will show it."

Rachel grabbed the tablet.

She searched the file timeline.

"There is no rest."

Frank stared at the screen.

"There was."

"Not here."

"Harrow cut it."

I wanted to believe him because the alternative would mean the man beside me for twenty years had helped kill the woman I loved.

That was exactly why I could not believe him.

A Coast Guard officer entered the room.

"We found a launch missing from the stern bay."

"How long ago?"

"Based on engine temperature, less than fifteen minutes."

Rachel checked the tracker.

The signal had stopped moving.

Then it split.

One dot remained aboard Vanguard.

The fake key.

Harrow had left it behind.

"He knew about the tracker," Rachel said.

The officer unfolded a nautical chart.

"There are three places a launch could reach quickly from here."

Frank looked at the map.

His finger stopped on a small island south of Gloucester.

"This one."

"Why?"

I asked.

"Thomas owned a clinic there through an offshore trust."

"Of course he did."

Frank ignored the bitterness.

"It was used for private recovery after surgeries."

Rachel looked at him.

"And after Northreach?"

His eyes lowered.

"Some of the staff were moved there."

A radio transmission interrupted us.

The Coast Guard had received a distress call from the island.

A male voice claimed a child was in respiratory failure.

My blood turned to ice.

"When?"

"Two minutes ago."

I ran toward the deck.

Frank followed.

I turned at the ladder and shoved him back.

"You stay here."

"Michael."

"You stay away from my son until I know whether you helped kill his mother."

His face went still.

Rachel looked between us.

Then she stepped toward me.

"I am coming."

Frank opened his mouth.

She cut him off.

"You do not get to choose this time."

The Coast Guard launch was prepared in seconds.

As we pulled away from Vanguard, I looked back once.

Frank stood alone at the rail.

Then my phone, returned by the Coast Guard after recovery from the pier, vibrated.

Rachel sat opposite me in the launch with both hands locked around the rail.

She had spent most of her adult life believing Frank chose the Carter family over her.

Now she had heard evidence that he had chosen her at the worst possible moment and destroyed someone else by doing it.

"That is almost harder," she said quietly.

I knew exactly what she meant.

A clean betrayal gives you somewhere to put the anger.

A terrible attempt at love leaves nowhere safe to place it.

The island grew larger ahead of us.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message came from Emily's temporary hospital number.

Only one sentence appeared.

MICHAEL, HARROW JUST TOLD ME FRANK WAS THE LAST PERSON TO SPEAK TO AVA BEFORE HER CAR CRASHED.
