Chapter 14 - REBECCA'S SECOND LIE

Claire held the photograph so tightly that the burned edge crumbled between her fingers.

Rebecca stared at it.

"Claire, I can explain."

Claire looked at her.

"You keep saying that after I discover things you did not tell me."

Ethan stood between Nora and Lena near the ambulance line.

He could see Rebecca's face clearly.

She did not look confused.

She looked defeated.

Claire held up the photograph.

"When was this taken?"

Rebecca swallowed.

"Two weeks before Evelyn died."

"Why were you in her hospital room?"

"She called me."

"Why?"

Rebecca looked toward Ethan.

Claire stepped into her line of sight.

"Do not look at him."

"Look at me."

Rebecca's eyes filled.

"Evelyn asked me to investigate Victor from inside Parker Biomedical."

Claire stared.

"You were working for my mother."

"Yes."

"For how long?"

"Almost a year."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"And you never thought to mention that while I was discovering she had evidence hidden in a bank vault?"

"She made me promise."

"She is dead."

Rebecca flinched.

"I know."

"I was almost dead."

"I know."

"My son was targeted."

Rebecca lowered her head.

"I know."

Claire moved closer.

"Then stop protecting a promise that is protecting the people who did this."

Rebecca looked up.

Something changed in her face.

"The promise was not protecting them."

"It was protecting Ethan."

Ethan frowned.

"Me?"

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Lena stepped closer.

"We should continue this somewhere secure."

They moved to a state police field office two counties away.

Voss was transported under guard to a hospital.

Dana Mercer was taken into custody.

Brennan received stitches and refused to go home.

Mara began copying the recovered Meridian ledger before anyone could lose it.

Claire, Ethan, Rebecca, Nora, Lena, and Brennan sat in a windowless conference room.

A camera recorded the conversation.

Rebecca stared at the table.

"Evelyn found the Continuity program about fourteen months ago."

"She knew Victor was using trust clients."

"She did not know how far it went."

Claire said nothing.

Rebecca continued.

"She asked me to search corporate communication archives because Victor sometimes used Parker Biomedical servers for private work."

"Why would he do that?" Ethan asked.

"Because he thought no one would look there."

Rebecca looked at him.

"Your grandmother knew he was arrogant."

Mara would have liked that sentence.

Rebecca found invoices, travel schedules, and encrypted folders.

One folder contained photographs of people who had been declared dead.

Another contained draft obituaries created before several of those deaths.

Then Rebecca found a folder labeled LEGACY.

Inside were documents connected to Ethan's great-grandfather, Samuel Parker.

Claire frowned.

"What documents?"

Rebecca reached into her bag.

Lena immediately stopped her.

"Slowly."

Rebecca removed a folded copy of an old trust amendment.

Nora recognized it.

"Where did you get that?"

"Evelyn gave it to me."

Nora read the first page.

Her expression changed.

"Claire, have you ever seen this?"

"No."

Nora slid the document across the table.

The amendment created a special controlling share in Parker Biomedical.

It did not belong to Claire.

It did not belong to the trust administrator.

It belonged to Samuel Parker's youngest living direct descendant upon reaching age thirteen.

Ethan stared at the page.

"Me."

Nora nodded.

"You."

Claire looked stunned.

"Why did no one tell me?"

"Because the amendment was sealed after a family lawsuit twenty years ago."

Nora turned pages.

"Your mother must have discovered it during the trust review."

Rebecca nodded.

"Victor discovered it too."

Everything shifted.

Ethan was not merely a small voting block.

At thirteen, he would receive a special share capable of vetoing any sale of the company's core medical patents.

The acquisition Victor wanted could not fully close without that consent.

"That is why my photograph was in the folder," Ethan said.

Rebecca looked at him.

"Yes."

Claire's face hardened.

"What was Victor planning to do with him?"

Rebecca took a long breath.

"He had two options."

"If Richard became Ethan's guardian before the birthday, they planned to argue that the guardian could exercise the special share."

Nora shook her head.

"That interpretation would be challenged."

"Victor knew that."

Rebecca's voice dropped.

"So he prepared the second option."

Claire did not want to ask.

"What second option?"

Rebecca looked at Ethan.

"Make sure the share never vested."

The room became silent.

Ethan understood the words before Claire did.

If he did not reach thirteen, the special share would pass to the general trust.

Victor would control it.

Claire stood so quickly her chair fell backward.

"You knew this?"

Rebecca began crying.

"Not until Evelyn showed me."

"And you still stayed quiet?"

"Evelyn begged me."

"Why?"

"Because she thought if Victor knew you knew, he would move sooner."

Claire shook her head.

"He moved anyway."

"Yes."

"And you did nothing."

Rebecca looked up.

"That is not true."

She reached for the document again.

"I changed Ethan's school emergency contacts."

"I created alerts on Victor's travel accounts."

"I copied files."

"I tried to get to Ethan Thursday."

Claire's anger did not soften.

"You also drafted my death announcement."

Rebecca flinched.

"I was trying to make Victor believe I was still useful."

"You let me think you were my friend."

Rebecca whispered.

"I am your friend."

Claire stared at her.

"A friend tells you when someone has planned your funeral."

Rebecca had no answer.

Ethan watched both women.

He loved Rebecca.

He also understood his mother's rage.

Secrets had nearly killed them.

Even secrets meant to protect them had become weapons in someone else's hands.

Brennan interrupted gently.

"There is another issue."

He pointed to the trust amendment.

"If Victor needs Ethan's share, the danger does not end because Claire is alive."

Lena nodded.

"His birthday is eleven days away."

"Which means we treat Ethan as a protected witness and a target."

Ethan hated the word target.

Claire hated it more.

Nora looked at the amendment.

"Can we accelerate vesting?"

"No."

"Can Claire transfer the share?"

"It does not exist in Ethan's hands until the birthday."

Mara entered the room carrying printed pages from the Meridian ledger.

She stopped when she saw everyone's faces.

"I found something worse."

Claire laughed without humor.

"Of course you did."

Mara spread the pages across the table.

Each Continuity subject had a status code.

Some read TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Some read ESTATE CLOSED.

Claire's code read PENDING DISPOSITION.

Ethan's read VESTING EVENT.

But another code appeared beside Evelyn Parker's name.

Claire stared.

"My mother was in the system?"

Mara nodded.

"Not as a target."

"As what?"

Mara pointed to the status field.

Evelyn's line read FOUNDER ACCESS.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Nora looked confused.

"Founder of what?"

Mara turned to Voss's recovered files.

"According to the system metadata, the Continuity database was created nine years ago."

"The original administrative account was registered to Evelyn Parker."

Claire stared at the screen.

"That is impossible."

Rebecca whispered.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

Claire asked Lena to make a copy of the trust amendment for Ethan.

Nora objected at first because the document was legally complicated.

Claire insisted.

"He is the person everyone is trying to control through it."

"He deserves to know what it says."

Nora simplified the language without hiding the meaning.

Ethan read the section twice.

"Great-grandpa thought a thirteen-year-old should be able to block adults from selling a company?"

Nora almost smiled.

"He thought the family should not be able to erase the next generation from decisions about the patents."

Ethan looked at Claire.

"So Victor's problem is that someone dead tried to protect someone not born yet."

Claire nodded.

That was exactly the kind of long memory Victor had failed to respect.

May you like

Her face had gone white.

"That is the part Evelyn made me promise never to tell you."
