## CHAPTER 14 ### The Children Without Names

Camila’s claim sounded impossible.
Rebecca later confirmed part of it.
The Valdés archive contained records of illegal adoptions arranged for wealthy families, politicians and business leaders over more than fifty years. Some children came from desperate mothers pressured into signing documents. Others had been declared dead and removed from hospitals.
The system began with Arturo’s grandfather.
It continued under Arturo’s father.
Arturo modernized it through private clinics, fertility companies and charitable foundations.
Whether a future president had been involved was uncertain. Camila had seen a coded file marked POTUS but never opened it.
Arturo used the archive to blackmail powerful people.
That explained why investigations disappeared.
Why prosecutors changed identities.
Why hospitals altered records.
Why Daniel’s protection team had been compromised.
It also meant federal help could not be trusted blindly.
Rebecca requested a direct meeting with the attorney general’s office. Detective Moreno transmitted copies of the evidence from St. Augustine to multiple independent courts and journalists at the same time.
Arturo could silence individuals.
He could not silence everyone.
The infant tracking signals continued south.
They crossed into Mexico shortly after sunrise.
Rafael arranged a private aircraft through a company Arturo did not control.
Doctors refused to release me.
I signed myself out against medical advice.
Dr. Chen called it reckless.
She was right.
I went anyway.
Lucia had spent less than one day in the world. Arturo had already turned her into leverage.
Rafael met us at the airport.
When he saw blood on my clothing, anger flashed across his face.
Then he remembered he no longer had the right to command me.
He helped me onto the aircraft without speaking.
Camila, Bianca, Daniel, Michael, Rebecca and Detective Moreno joined us. Tomas remained in California to search for Amelia and Bianca’s missing son.
My mother and Mara stayed under federal protection.
During the flight, Rebecca opened the first layer of truth.
Arturo had not acted alone.
A council of seven families used the adoption network. The Valdés family provided transportation and medical facilities. Other families supplied judges, lawyers and political protection.
“The archive key opens a mechanical vault beneath the monastery,” Rebecca explained. “No electronic access. No remote destruction.”
“Why did Arturo take the babies there?” I asked.
“To complete a registration ritual.”
Bianca stared at her.
“A what?”
“The children are entered into the family ledger. Their biological identities are sealed, and legal identities are created.”
“He plans to erase them,” Michael said.
“He plans to define them.”
Rafael’s hands tightened.
“What happens after registration?”
“Arturo can present forged birth records in multiple jurisdictions.”
“He could declare Grace my daughter,” Bianca whispered.
“Or Lucia,” Rebecca said.
I looked at her.
“Why would he declare Lucia Bianca’s?”
“To separate Lucia from Elena legally. Then he could claim Elena’s child died and install another infant as heir.”
“They cannot fake DNA.”
“DNA matters only if courts allow testing.”
Detective Moreno said international authorities were preparing to intercept Arturo near the monastery.
Rebecca shook her head.
“The local police chief is part of the network.”
“Then we involve federal forces.”
“The regional commander’s daughter was adopted through Arturo.”
Every path returned to the archive.
We landed at a private airstrip near Ensenada.
A trusted Mexican federal investigator named Ana Torres met us with a small team.
The infant tracking signals had stopped at three different locations.
One near the monastery.
One near a coastal clinic.
One at a marina.
Arturo had separated the babies.
We divided despite the risk.
Michael and Daniel went with Torres to the clinic because Hope might require medical support.
Bianca and Rebecca followed the marina signal, believing Grace had been placed on a boat.
Rafael, Camila and I approached the monastery.
Detective Moreno came with us.
The monastery stood above the sea behind ancient stone walls. Its chapel tower had no bell. Black vehicles lined the courtyard.
Camila unlocked a narrow gate hidden behind vines.
We entered through underground burial tunnels.
My incision burned with every step.
Rafael kept one hand near my back without touching me.
At the end of the tunnel, voices echoed.
Arturo was speaking to several men in Spanish.
Camila translated quietly.
“He is telling them the archive has been compromised.”
“What do they want?”
“The key.”
We looked at the iron chain around her neck.
Arturo claimed Camila had betrayed the council. He offered Lucia in exchange for protection.
My daughter cried somewhere beyond the wall.
I moved toward the sound.
Rafael caught my wrist.
“Wait.”
“I hear her.”
“So does he.”
The crying stopped suddenly.
I almost screamed.
Detective Moreno found a narrow viewing slit.
Inside the chamber, Arturo stood beside a stone table.
Lucia lay inside a portable incubator.
A doctor adjusted her oxygen.
Five older men surrounded them.
One wore a judicial robe.
Another was a former senator I recognized from television.
Arturo held a document.
He planned to register Lucia as the biological daughter of Rafael and Vivian Price.
My marriage would be declared fraudulent.
I would be labeled an unrelated surrogate experiencing a psychiatric delusion.
“They have records ready,” Camila whispered.
Rafael’s face turned to stone.
He removed his wedding ring and handed it to me.
“What are you doing?”
“Creating a distraction.”
“No.”
“I signed the first contract that brought you into this nightmare. I will not stand behind a wall while he steals our daughter.”
“You could be killed.”
“So could she.”
He kissed Lucia’s name engraved inside the ring.
Then he stepped through the chamber entrance.
Arturo smiled.
“The obedient son returns.”
“I brought what you need.”
Rafael held up a flash drive.
“The Hart Trust access codes.”
He was bluffing.
Arturo knew it.
But the council members did not.
Their attention shifted.
Detective Moreno and the Mexican agents moved through another entrance.
Camila walked into the chamber wearing the vault key openly.
The council reacted immediately.
Rafael reached the incubator.
The doctor blocked him.
I entered behind Camila.
Arturo’s expression darkened.
“You never learn.”
“I learned you need witnesses too powerful to kill.”
Hidden cameras attached to Detective Moreno’s clothing transmitted everything to multiple news outlets.
The former senator noticed.
He shouted.
Chaos erupted.
One council member ran toward the archive tunnel.
Another drew a weapon.
Camila threw the vault key toward me.
Arturo lunged.
Rafael tackled him.
Detective Moreno fired into the ceiling.
Mexican agents secured the doctor and two council members.
I reached Lucia.
Her oxygen line had been disconnected.
Her lips were turning blue.
I reattached the tube with shaking hands.
The monitor beeped.
Air moved into her lungs.
Rafael pinned Arturo against the stone floor.
“You are finished.”
Arturo looked toward me.
“No. She is.”
A red light began flashing above the archive door.
Rebecca had warned us the vault had no electronic destruction system.
She was wrong.
Or Arturo had added one.
The monastery shook.
Stone dust fell from the ceiling.
A countdown appeared on a wall panel.
Three minutes.
The chamber would collapse into the sea.
We ran toward the burial tunnels with Lucia’s incubator.
Arturo escaped Rafael during the panic and entered the vault corridor.
Camila followed him.
I shouted for her to stop.
She looked back once.
“The records must survive.”
The stone door closed behind her.
Rafael tried to open it.
The mechanism locked.
Two minutes remained.
Lucia’s monitor alarmed.
We had no choice but to leave.
As we reached the outer tunnel, the monastery began collapsing.
A wall of dust and seawater exploded behind us.
Rafael covered Lucia and me with his body.
We emerged onto the cliff as the central chapel fell into the ocean.
Camila and Arturo were still inside.
The vault key lay in my hand.
Then the tracking device attached to it began blinking.
A message appeared on my phone.
VAULT OPENED.
Someone had used the key after Camila entered.
A video loaded.
Camila stood inside the archive beside Arturo.
Neither appeared trapped.
Arturo faced the camera.
“Elena, bring Lucia to the marina.”
Camila lifted a gun.
She aimed it at Arturo.
Then she turned the weapon toward the camera.
Her voice was cold.
“Do not come.”
The feed ended with a gunshot.
At the same moment, Bianca called from the marina.
She had found Grace.
She had also found her missing son.
But Rebecca had disappeared.
May you like
And the woman holding Bianca’s son claimed to be his real mother.
