Chapter 12: The Arrest That Became a Trap

Kane wore a federal identification badge.
To the marshals escorting him, he was still Director Samuel Kane, special adviser to the Department of Justice.
Caroline West pointed toward Lily.
“Take her into custody.”
Mara stepped between them.
“This facility is under an active evidence-protection order.”
“Which I am terminating.”
“You are named in the Project Lantern archive.”
West’s expression remained controlled.
“That archive was created by Lily Hale to frame public officials.”
Claire entered the hallway.
Kane’s eyes moved immediately to the pendant around her neck.
That was why he had come personally.
Not for Lily.
For the encryption token.
I stepped beside Claire.
Kane smiled.
“Arthur, you should have stayed retired.”
“You should have stayed on the plane.”
West ordered the marshals forward.
Mara raised her credentials.
“Before anyone acts, verify the indictment through an independent federal judge.”
West’s voice sharpened.
“I am the United States Attorney.”
“And you are under investigation.”
The marshals hesitated.
Kane had built his power by ensuring that decent people obeyed procedures corrupted people controlled.
But hesitation created space.
Lily used it.
She stepped forward holding the cracked phone.
“This recorded Richard admitting that the police chief and Judge Ashcroft were helping him imprison me.”
West laughed.
“That proves domestic abuse, not a federal conspiracy.”
“No,” Lily said. “But the recording did not stop after my father carried me outside.”
Richard’s phone had remained connected to the mansion’s sound system through a wireless speaker.
For several minutes after we left, the cracked phone continued capturing voices.
Mara played the restored section.
Richard’s mother could be heard crying.
Then Kane’s voice came through a speakerphone.
“You should have taken the phone from her before Arthur arrived.”
Judge Ashcroft responded.
“What about the commitment order?”
“Backdate it.”
Caroline West spoke next.
“And the indictment?”
“Activate it only if Hale reopens Project Lantern.”
The marshals slowly lowered their hands.
West turned toward Kane.
“You said the recording was destroyed.”
Kane reached beneath his jacket.
Mara moved first.
She struck his arm aside as a shot exploded into the ceiling.
Agents tackled West.
Kane forced open a stairwell door and ran.
I followed him to the underground parking level.
He reached a black sedan, but Daniel Cross stepped from behind a concrete column.
His injured shoulder was bandaged.
He held a weapon aimed directly at Kane.
“End of the road, Samuel.”
Kane stopped.
Then he smiled.
“You are still using that phrase Arthur taught you.”
Daniel’s weapon shifted toward me.
My stomach tightened.
“Daniel?”
“I am sorry,” he said.
Claire appeared behind me.
“No.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with something deeper than betrayal.
“Arthur’s authentication did not move Claire into protection,” he said. “Mine did.”
“We know.”
“No, you do not.”
He looked toward Claire.
“I was not trying to save her from Kane.”
The parking garage became silent.
“I was saving her from Arthur’s final operation.”
May you like
Kane smiled.
Then Daniel handed him the encryption pendant.
