Chapter 2: A Mother's Confession

Chapter 2: A Mother's Confession

The criminal trial began three months later.

The courtroom overflowed with reporters.

Every major news network covered the case that had destroyed one of the city's wealthiest families.

Margaret entered wearing a gray prison uniform instead of designer clothing.

She looked twenty years older.

When asked how she pleaded...

She remained silent.

Then she slowly stood.

"I'll tell the truth."

Every eye turned toward her.

"My husband built this family with nothing."

Her voice trembled for the first time.

"When he died... I became obsessed with protecting everything he left behind."

She looked toward Ava.

"I believed she would eventually take my son away from me."

"So I arranged the crash."

Gasps spread across the courtroom.

"I only wanted her injured."

Margaret wiped away a tear.

"But after she survived... I couldn't stop."

She admitted paying the mechanic.

She admitted forging medical records.

She admitted replacing Ava's daily vitamins with prescription sedatives that slowly weakened her memory.

She admitted hiring lawyers to prepare false ownership papers.

Every confession matched the evidence investigators had already collected.

The judge remained expressionless.

When sentencing arrived...

Margaret received decades in prison for attempted murder, fraud, conspiracy, elder abuse of a vulnerable adult, and document forgery.

As officers led her away, she turned back one final time.

"I'm sorry, Ethan."

He didn't answer.

Instead...

He walked across the courtroom to Ava.

He gently knelt beside her wheelchair.

"I'm sorry I wasn't there when you needed me most."

Ava quietly took his hand.

Neither of them spoke again.

They no longer needed words.
