Part Two: The Woman Behind the Wheelchair

Nobody moved.

The entire ballroom seemed trapped in a single breath.

Emma realized she was still holding Victoria Langford’s wrist.

She released it immediately.

“I’m sorry,” she said quietly.

Victoria staggered backward, humiliated that a waitress had stopped her in front of Chicago’s elite.

“Sorry?” Victoria hissed. “Do you have any idea who I am?”

Emma lowered her eyes.

“No, ma’am.”

The answer only made Victoria angrier.

Before she could continue, a deep voice cut through the room.

“That’s enough.”

The words were calm.

Yet every person in the ballroom felt them.

Victoria froze.

Several guests turned pale.

Emma looked up.

A tall man in a black tuxedo was walking toward them.

Vincent Moretti.

The room parted for him without being asked.

His dark eyes moved from Victoria to his mother.

“Are you hurt?” he asked Isabella.

The elderly woman smiled softly.

“No. Thanks to her.”

She pointed toward Emma.

For a moment, Vincent studied the waitress.

Not her uniform.

Not her appearance.

Her eyes.

The same eyes that had stepped forward when everyone else stepped back.

“Thank you,” he said.

The ballroom gasped.

Vincent Moretti did not thank people.

At least not publicly.

Emma felt heat rise to her cheeks.

“I was only helping.”

“Most people don’t.”

For a second, something almost human softened Vincent’s expression.

Then his security team quietly escorted Victoria away.

The gala continued.

But nobody forgot what had happened.

Neither did Vincent.

The next morning, Emma arrived home after her shift and found three men standing outside her apartment building.

Fear shot through her instantly.

Then one of them stepped forward.

“Miss Carter?”

She nodded cautiously.

“We work for Mr. Moretti.”

Emma’s stomach tightened.

Had she done something wrong?

The man handed her an envelope.

Inside was a business card.

And a handwritten note.

My mother would like to have lunch with you.

Emma stared at the message.

She had no idea that accepting that invitation would change her life forever.
