Chapter 2: Eleanor's Secret

Police detectives arrived before the engagement dinner could resume.

Not because of Evelyn.

Because Eleanor suddenly tried to leave through the hotel's private entrance.

Security stopped her.

"Mrs. Vance..."

"Please remain inside."

She froze.

Detective Mason approached Evelyn.

"You asked us to wait until tonight."

She nodded.

"Everyone who needed to hear the truth is finally here."

Gasps echoed through the ballroom.

Detective Mason projected an old surveillance recording onto the enormous reception screen.

The date appeared.

Ten years earlier.

The Vance family camping trip.

The same day Evelyn disappeared.

The footage showed Eleanor leading eight-year-old Evelyn away from the campsite while Richard searched nearby.

Then...

A black SUV.

A large envelope.

Cash.

Eleanor handed Evelyn to two strangers.

The ballroom exploded.

Richard stumbled backward.

Scarlett burst into tears.

"No..."

"No..."

Eleanor screamed.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like that!"

She collapsed onto the marble floor.

Detective Mason continued.

"The kidnappers confessed three weeks ago."

"They admitted Eleanor paid them to make the child disappear."

"But they couldn't go through with killing her."

Instead, they abandoned Evelyn outside a church orphanage hundreds of miles away.

A retired nurse adopted her.

Raised her.

Loved her.

Until she passed away last year.

Only then did Evelyn discover old newspaper articles about her disappearance.

She recognized her own bracelet.

Her own face.

Her own name.

Everything Eleanor had stolen...

Returned in one devastating night.

Officers placed handcuffs around Eleanor's wrists.

As they led her away, she screamed at Evelyn.

"You ruined everything!"

Evelyn answered quietly.

"No."

"You ruined it ten years ago."
