Chapter 13 - Forty-Eight Hours

The next hearing was scheduled for Friday.

Alder Ridge Capital planned to seek emergency enforcement of its asserted lien forty-eight hours earlier.

If it succeeded, the estate could be dragged into expensive litigation over collateral it had never lawfully pledged.

David believed the shell-company records would undermine Alder Ridge's claim, but important account statements were still missing.

Helen assembled a team to prepare a response.

I volunteered to help with chronology and document organization.

No one wanted my father to win because his opponents ran out of time.

My mother began calling distant relatives.

She told them I intended to sell the farm and evict families who had lived there for generations.

That was false.

But the rumor moved faster than any court order.

A tenant named Mrs. Alvarez came to my porch carrying a folder of rent receipts.

She had worked the farm's orchard for twenty years.

“Your grandfather promised my husband we'd be able to stay,” she said.

I invited her inside.

I showed her the temporary trustee's notice preserving current leases.

She took a breath that shook her shoulders.

“Your father told me you were coming with deputies.”

The cruelty was so unnecessary it almost stunned me.

My father was using elderly tenants as pressure points.

He wanted their fear to become my guilt.

I asked Mrs. Alvarez to contact the trustee directly if anyone made further threats.

By evening, three other tenants reported similar calls.

Helen informed the court and preserved their statements.

Meanwhile, the independent accountant located transfers from Eleanor's account into Alder Ridge's holding company.

The lender claiming to be a stranger had received money from my mother.

David prepared a detailed tracing schedule.

At ten that night, the power failed at the farmhouse.

The entire road stayed lit.

Only my home was dark.

I checked the exterior breaker from inside the security camera's view and found signs that the service disconnect had been tampered with.

I called the utility and police rather than touching it.

Someone had wanted me outside in the dark.

When deputies arrived, they found tire tracks near the boundary gate.

The cameras captured a vehicle, but the plate was obscured.

At midnight, my phone displayed a message from an unknown number.

WITHDRAW THE AUDIT OR THE FARM PAYS.

For the first time in years, I slept with every light on after the utility restored power.

And at dawn, Helen called with a more immediate problem.

Alder Ridge had filed a sworn statement claiming I personally confirmed the loan by video call.
