Chapter 1 - The Name Beneath the Signature

Arthur recognized Brooke's signature before he understood the rest of the page.

The document was a fertility-clinic authorization dated eleven months before the twins' birth.

It identified Brooke as the prospective mother and listed a man under the initials N.B. as the genetic contributor.

Arthur stared at the letters until his mother's kitchen seemed to tilt.

"Who is N.B.?"

Victoria gripped the counter instead of answering.

"Mom, look at me."

"Your brother," she said.

Arthur made a noise that did not resemble a word.

His younger brother Nathan had been the best man at our wedding.

Nathan had carried our luggage on our honeymoon, toasted our future children, and visited us in the hospital after my first miscarriage.

"That's impossible."

Victoria opened the envelope and placed the old medical report beside the clinic authorization.

She explained that Arthur had undergone fertility testing at nineteen after a serious infection, and the specialist had documented profound damage to his sperm production.

The report did not prove conception could never happen, but it meant the certainty Arthur displayed in those hospital photographs was tragically misplaced.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Your father asked me to wait until you could bear it.

Then he died.

And I kept waiting."

Arthur swept the papers onto the floor.

"Brooke wouldn't do this.

Nathan wouldn't do this."

Victoria's eyes followed the scattered pages.

"Brooke came here last winter, demanding the name of the doctor who treated you.

She said she was helping you arrange a surprise for your wife."

Arthur remembered Brooke asking strange questions about his childhood illness, always when I was out of the room.

He had thought she was interested in him.

Now he wondered whether she had been measuring how easily he could be deceived.

His phone flashed with a message from Brooke.

"Did she sign?

Tell me she signed.

Nathan says the transfer has to happen by morning."

Arthur read it twice.

Then he called his brother.

Nathan answered with easy amusement.

"Congratulations, big brother.

You're finally a father."

"What transfer?"

There was a long pause.

"Arthur, where are you?"

"With Mom.

I'm looking at a document with your initials on it."

The call ended.

Victoria bent to gather the fallen pages, but Arthur stopped her.

"You knew something was wrong and you let me destroy my marriage."

"I tried to tell your wife because I knew you'd refuse to hear it from me."

"She knew?"

"Three weeks ago.

She asked me not to confront you until she could protect the company."

Arthur looked toward the dark window.

At that very moment, I was sitting across from my attorney, Mara Ellis, examining an urgent notice from our bank.

The notice concerned a wire transfer scheduled for 8:00 a.m.

The beneficiary was a company called Meridian Advisory Group.

The authorized signatory was Arthur.

The sum was $2.4 million.

And the approval attached to the request bore a digital signature that looked exactly like mine.
