CHAPTER 2 — “The Secret He Buried”

The banquet hall seemed to shrink around them.

The husband stared at the photograph as though it had become a ghost from another life.

His hands trembled.

The wealthy woman looked from her husband to the young server, searching for answers neither of them seemed able to give.

Finally, the husband spoke.

Husband:
“What was your mother's name?”

The server swallowed hard.

Server:
“Sarah Bennett.”

The color drained from his face.

A gasp escaped the wealthy woman.

Because she had heard that name before.

Years ago.

Long before she met him.

The husband closed his eyes.

For more than twenty years, he had carried a secret.

When he was young, reckless, and struggling to build a future, he had fallen deeply in love with Sarah.

But his wealthy family had disapproved.

They forced him to leave.

Forced him to choose between love and the inheritance that would one day build his empire.

He never saw Sarah again.

At least, that was what he had believed.

Until now.

The server reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded letter.

Its edges were worn from years of handling.

Server:
“My mother wrote this before she died.”

She handed it to him.

With shaking fingers, he unfolded it.

The first line nearly broke him.

"If you're reading this, our daughter finally found you."

Tears filled his eyes.

May you like

The daughter he never knew existed was standing right in front of him.

And he had spent half his life searching for success while unknowingly losing the most important part of himself.
