Two months later, Lily's surgery day arrived.
The hospital waiting room felt endless.
Ryan sat beside Emily, unable to stop shaking.
Then the surgeon appeared.
Everyone stood.
For one terrifying moment, nobody spoke.
Finally, the surgeon smiled.
"The operation was successful."
Ryan broke down instantly.
Emily wrapped her arms around him as tears filled both their eyes.
Across the room, Claire quietly cried too.

Weeks later, Lily moved into Ryan and Emily's home.
One evening, Emily watched the little girl laughing in the backyard.
Ryan stepped beside her.
"You know," he said softly, "if you had opened that door that night, everything would have ended differently."
Emily smiled.
"No."

She glanced toward Lily.

That night, Lily ran into the house carrying a drawing.
It showed three people holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun.
