Chapter 1 – The Recording That Stopped the Wedding

Richard Caldwell's smile never disappeared.

It simply became thinner.

More controlled.

The guests noticed nothing.

Jasmine noticed everything.

His thumb slowly pressed against the back of her hand—a silent warning disguised as affection.

"Give me the tablet, son," Richard said gently, kneeling until he was eye level with Zach. "Whatever game you're playing, we can talk about it later."

Zach didn't move.

He looked at his mother instead.

"You told us never to hide the truth."

Jasmine's heart tightened.

"Play it."

The ballroom exploded with whispers.

Richard stood immediately.

"I strongly advise against this."

It was the first time his voice carried authority instead of kindness.

Head of Security Daniel Hayes took one cautious step toward the children.

Before he could reach them, Professor Eleanor Simmons stepped into his path.

"Touch those children," she said calmly, "and every camera in this ballroom will record it."

Daniel hesitated.

Every guest had already raised their phones.

Richard knew force was no longer an option.

Zach tapped the screen.

The ballroom speakers crackled.

Then Richard's voice filled the room.

"...I never wanted three children."

Laughter followed.

His laughter.

The recording continued.

"They're expensive."

"They slow everything down."

"Once the marriage is finished, Jasmine will sign the trust agreements."

"After that..."

A pause.

"I'll send the children to boarding school overseas."

Another man laughed.

"And if she refuses?"

Richard answered without emotion.

"She'll refuse once."

"Then she'll realize she doesn't own Taylor Shield anymore."

The ballroom became completely silent.

Jasmine couldn't breathe.

She turned slowly.

Richard wasn't looking at her.

He was staring at the tablet.

As if willing it to disappear.

"Richard..."

Her voice barely existed.

"You recorded yourself destroying our family."

He finally looked at her.

"I can explain."

"No."

Jasmine slipped her engagement ring from her finger.

The diamond struck the marble floor with a sharp metallic sound.

"I don't think you can."

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.

The billionaire's perfect wedding had collapsed before the vows were spoken.

But Professor Simmons wasn't finished.

She slowly opened the cream-colored handbag she had carried all morning.

Inside rested a thick sealed envelope.

"I was hoping I wouldn't need this today."

She handed it to Jasmine.

May you like

"But after hearing that recording..."

"You deserve to know everything."
