Chapter 3: The Shattered Glass

By the time Meredith arrived at the hospital, she was a ghost of herself. Her makeup was smeared, and she was shaking uncontrollably. She practically collapsed into the chair next to Chloe's hospital bed, sobbing as she held our daughter's hands.

"I'm so sorry," Meredith kept whispering, kissing Chloe's forehead. "I'm so sorry I didn't see it. I'm so sorry, baby."

"It's okay, Mom," Chloe said softly. "Dad believed me."

Two detectives from the Special Victims Unit arrived an hour later. They took our statements, reviewed the medical photographs, and collected the documentation from the social worker. The evidence was irrefutable. The bruising matched a large adult male's hand, and Chloe’s testimony was consistent, detailed, and heartbreakingly credible.

"Where is Richard right now?" Detective Miller asked, clicking his pen closed.

"I kicked him out," Meredith said, her voice turning to steel as she wiped her eyes. "When Harrison called, I confronted him. He called Chloe a liar. He said she was just acting out. I threw a vase at his head and told him to get the hell out of my house. I think he went back to his place in Oak Creek."

Miller nodded to his partner. "Let's go pay Grandpa a visit."

They told us we couldn't go back to the house until Richard was in custody. So, we sat in the quiet hospital cafeteria, eating stale vending machine pretzels, waiting for the call. I held my wife and daughter close, forming a protective circle in the sterile room. Our family was broken, but for the first time in months, the secret was out. The poison was being drained.

At 4:00 PM, my phone buzzed. It was Miller.

"We got him, Mr. Vance. He's locked up."
