Chapter 2: Lucas's Last Request

The morning after the school assembly, Ethan sat alone in his bedroom, unable to sleep.
Lucas's old notebook rested on his desk.
It had been returned to the family after his brother passed away, but Ethan had never found the strength to read beyond the first few pages.
Now, after meeting Maya, something told him the answers had always been inside.
He slowly opened the worn leather cover.
Most of the pages were filled with hospital schedules, sketches, and unfinished thoughts.
Then one folded letter slipped onto the floor.
Across the front, Lucas had written only one sentence.
For Ethan—only after you meet Maya.
Ethan's hands shook.
Inside, Lucas wrote:
"Little brother... if you're reading this, it means Maya finally found you."
"Please don't let her walk through life alone the way I almost did."
"Everyone will notice her prosthetic leg before they notice her heart."
"You can't change what happened to her... but you can make sure she never feels invisible again."
Ethan wiped away tears.
The final page contained something unexpected.
Lucas had quietly created a scholarship in Maya's name.
Every prize money he earned from local art competitions and every dollar he had saved from tutoring younger children had been placed into a small education fund.
The instructions were simple.
"Give it to Maya only when she believes she has no future."
At school that afternoon, Ethan found Maya sitting alone beneath the old oak tree behind the gym.
Without saying a word, he handed her Lucas's letter.
She read silently.
Halfway through, she covered her mouth.
"I thought..." she whispered.
"I thought I was the only one who still remembered him."
Ethan shook his head.
"He never stopped believing you'd come."
For the first time since Lucas died...
Neither of them felt completely alone.
